We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Weatherbie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, how does your business help the community?
Our small community is starving for more inclusive things to do whether it’s the arts or entertainment. For over 50 years, our organization has impacted people of all ages by offering art exhibits, art workshops, and classes. We have created a safe place for artists to come and display and/or perform their art. We are keeping the arts and culture alive and thriving in our community. We also offer job training and placement to interested parties. Our creative placemaking has given our community, and others, a perfect place to be. And, we also have people from other states and countries visiting and showcasing their art.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a multi-talented artist who works with various media. I paint, design and sew, crochet, and play music. I taught children’s art for many years, as well as art classes for teens and adults. I have always been inspired and creative coming from an artistic background that stems from my parents. I worked in construction for a few years learning the artistry of the building. My father was an architect, and learning how homes are made from paper to finish always fascinated me. Although, when I was young, I never found an art teacher in public education that would encourage me in my art. It wasn’t until my older years I was offered the opportunity to create and be brilliant in creativity. And, it is a true honor to be able to share my skills and passion with others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our community is small, and our organization is one of the very few that offer entertainment on several levels. However, there are other organizations in our neighboring communities that offer similar events. My best friend happens to be an artist, as well, so we share many common interests. We have a multitude of Mexican food restaurants in our area that have exceptional food. And, being a border town, we have access to multicultural activities. Even if it’s just to walk and browse the stores, our little sister cities offer tons of window shopping and fun people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My art mentor, Janice D. Johnson, recently retired from our organization. She was with Patrons of the Arts, Inc./Hilltop Gallery for over 40 plus years dedicating her time, expertise, and art to our community. She showed me everything I needed to know to run the gallery and teach others to do the same. She is greatly admired by myself and our community for everything she has most generously done.

Hilltop Gallery’s little gift shop is comprised of arts and crafts created by local and out-of-town artists. We are very proud of all the artists that showcase and come to our gallery. And, even more, proud of all the local artists and talent that grace us with their selves. These T-Shirts are one-of-a-kind prints of our gallery created by a local artist and are for sale in our little gift shop.
