We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellie Descoteaux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ellie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always loved to bake  as a small child growing up in an Italian family. When I was around 19 I became a soap maker and did so for 30 years! Like many people you get burned out after so long. I also created candies that I had a woman who owned a candy store ask to buy my peanut brittle recipe. I of course said no. I’ve been told by many that its the best and better than Sees Candies. We make a lot of Vegan Brittle too which happened to win best taste in 2018 at a vegan food festival in New Mexico! So Boulder Sweet Creations LLC was founded once I said Lets Do This! It was off and running. Then Covid hit! I was swamped. I was getting 40 orders a day and baking 15 hours a day 7 days a week.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the sole baker and business owner of Boulder Sweet Creations, LLC. My husband Rob is my taste taster ( how he stays skinny I dont know)! However, I have been a candy maker forever stirring caramel at the stove and wrapping in wax paper or making peanut brittle.  My peanut brittle was always popular at craft shows or as gifts to friends and family. I was asked by a company in Maine if I would sell her my Peanut Brittle recipe I said no. We make this in regular and Vegan version as well and its such a great product. I’ve won best taste in New Mexico 2018 at a vegan festival for it. I am a people person I love to meet others at events who after 32 years of shows become friends. My summer is quiet while people travel and from September to December I am busy making English Toffee, Divinity, Vegan/Regular Peanut Brittle, Thumbprint cookies ( i sell 3,000 cookies per year during those months) and Extreme Fudgy Brownies (dense, chewy, gooey and fudgy best Selling online)  I create old fashioned cookies from my childhood and new vegan candies too! I have learned along the way just to keep doing what you really like to do and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. It’s a long road, it’s a hard road, and lots of patience and  sore feet long & long hours. I like it. I don’t miss the corporate office world at all and I have lots of friends that I’ve met at shows and online. As a small woman business owner, it for me is happiness and struggles when orders are slow. Why do I do it? I really enjoy people and wonderful comments. I like the memory it creates or recreates for some.  The my mom used to make these and she is gone now. This cookie/candy reminds me of her and Thank you. That is why I do this.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend Melissa is from Florida and loved fried clams and visiting lighthouses Of course we are headed to Maine the place of my childhood summers spent at our cottage in York Beach, Maine. A day of sun, surf, salty sea breezes and freezing cold Atlantic ocean water. We travel up the East Coast to visit the famous Nubble Lighthouse its a must to visit. Just park at the top and gaze out at the breath taking waves that crash against the rocks. The Nubble lighthouse which dates back from 1869 its one of the most photographed in Maine. Suba divers practice diving here as well and you can watch them test diving. Next we continue on up to Orgunquit Maine to stop in and see Skip at his store Spoiled Rotten. A victorian home that has been made into a shop/store of goods from candles, boozy drinks, jams & jellies from Stonewall Kitchen, Artistic Designs as well. My go to stop if visiting Orgunquit. I also suggest visiting in Wells, Maine The Steakhouse for to die for French Onion soup as a side with of course Fried Clams/ Lobster or Steak. Our last stop of the day is in South Portland another lighthouse with the most breathtaking scenic walk around the grounds Gorgeous butterfly gardens, flowers, trees and ocean views There are also historial military buildings/ outbuildings and plaques to visit. At the top of the walk there are quaint little shops or you can buy tickets to tour the inside of the lighthouse. This makes for a long and wonderful trip to Maine with my bestie of 40 years.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my desire to bake and create to my mother and Auntie Joan. Both have passed in the last 4-5 years. Everyday as I bake I think of them both. I’m also thankful to my husband Rob who is my taste tester, box creator and my sounding board!  My sister Debbie for her encouragement & Melissa My best friend who has listened to the ups and downs for the past 30 years of why I am doing this! Love you all and Thank you!
