We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Kerr-Finell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Honestly, it’s that we always, always, always put people first (before profit or anything else.)
Our easy system for doing this is that when we are deciding something, we always ask ourselves — how would we decide this (or say this) if we were speaking to our best friend? This seems to make a difference! We often hear from our customers how “human” we are (although it’s crazy this is a differentiator in business!) — folks say we are approachable, friendly, empathetic, and responsive.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wholesale In a Box was started by Etan and Emily, a husband-and-wife team. We’re traveling homebodies with a love for station wagons, the Catskills, cooking, and brainstorming on our porch.
Between the two of us, we have worked in high-powered management consulting, managed ops at startups, and helped artisans of every size create a business they love. But in 2015, we kept noticing makers who struggled to grow wholesale, sometimes closing their businesses when they failed. So we started tinkering with solutions — at the time, nothing like Wholesale In a Box existed. Once we struck on the method, we started super-small, working with just 4 makers from our kitchen table. As we watched them thrive, we knew it was time to develop the software and training materials, and take the company full-time and nationwide.
Today, Wholesale In a Box has worked with more than 1000 makers, artists and designers around the world. We’ve helped makers quit their day jobs, triple revenue, and stay small when it was right. But everything we do today is as passionate and personal as it was from Day One. And we still work from our kitchen table most of the time.
It definitely has not been easy! But staying really close to our customers and designing everything around their needs has really been key for us over time. We’ve also learn that building a team is so crucial. We’ve been so lucky to work with extraordinary people and their commitment and passion and skill are the reason we’re still here!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many! On a personal level, the support of my husband has been hugely influential to me. In terms of more public figures, Seth Godin and his books have been so helpful over the years.
