We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Mati and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My motto in life is “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”.
For the majority of my life, I would always complain about things that I was dissatisfied or unhappy with. “I hate my job… I hate my body… I wish I made more money… I wish I had more free time.” I constantly lived in a state of disapproval & will admit that I had a “victim” mentality.
This quote changed my whole outlook on life and I realized that I am 100% in control of the present moment. Sure, some things happen that are out of your control, but you can absolutely control how you chose to react in those situations. I now am very intentional and conscious about what/who I spend my time with. This allows me to be the person I want to be & I have found that every day I am one step closer to living my dream while being happy and grateful in the moment.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I had always had a love and passion for all things beauty. I remember being 15 and doing my older sister’s prom makeup, practicing fun patterns on my nails & learning makeup on Youtube. After attending a university for just one semester, I decided to drop that and enroll in a cosmetology school. I was terrified that I was making a mistake, but for some reason it just felt right. I went to 1600 hours of school and got my license in 2021. My mental health was in a bad place when I graduated due to some personal things going on in my life, and I truly feel like at that time I lost my passion for the beauty industry. I felt completely lost in life and had no idea where to go from there.
After a couple years of working random jobs and making minimum wage, I started to get my “spark” back. I began doing bridal hair and make up as a side hustle and discovered joy & fulfillment in it. Eventually I decided to incorporate eyelash extensions into my service menu. I fell in love with the way that I was able sit down one on one with women & relate to them, get to know them, and allow them a safe space to open up to me- all while making them feel beautiful. I knew that I found my passion and I never looked back.
In October 2023, I decided to take a leap of faith and really give it my all to see if I could make a real career out of it. I am a hustler, and if I want something, I am going to make it happen. I knew it was a super competitive industry in Arizona but was determined to stand out. I knew I was good at performing the service, but what mattered more than anything was being genuine, relatable and kind to my clients. Every client I have I treat as a friend and I have been complimented time and time again about how easy I am to talk to. My clients have often jokingly referred to their appointments with me as their “therapy sessions”. I
realized after a few short weeks that it is not that hard to stand out and be successful in such a competitive industry. The skill is important but you just have to have the personality to go with it!
Within just a month and a half of seeking new clients, I was able to quit my full-time job and far surpass my prior income doing eyelash extensions, brows, hair styling and makeup. I named my business Elevated by Emma because my goal is to elevate confidence and beauty in every person that sits in my chair. I have found a true passion for what I do and wake up every day grateful for the life that I’ve built. I can’t believe I get to call this my “job”!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love checking out local coffee shops in Gilbert, AZ. My favorite spots are The Coffee Shop, Mythical Coffee, & Peixoto. There is nothing more relaxing than a coffee shop. I love to sit and chat for hours with friends, get some work done on a laptop, or unwind and read a good book. Fun fact- I’m actually not a coffee drinker. I am only there for the iced chai latte and good vibes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I know this might sound “cliché”, but I have to give the spotlight to my parents. My mom and dad are my hero’s and have supported me through all of the ups and downs in life. They have sacrificed so much to give me the life I have today. My parents believe in me, support me, and cheer me on with everything I do. I owe it all to them & I hope to somehow pay them back someday for all that they have done for me. I hope one day I can be even half of the parent that they are.
