We had the good fortune of connecting with Fatou Kiné Villane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fatou Kiné, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
In my experience as an actress and a musician, I continuously run into NOs. At first, I took it personally but as time passed, I changed my perspective, turning my NOs into Next Opportunity. With this mindset, I began receiving callbacks here and there or someone calling me to perform at a paid gig. That is when I knew that I needed to keep going and keep working towards my goals. I tell people all the time, that if you have a hunger for something, you have to always look at the bright side so you can have the will to keep going. It’s easier said than done, but it is possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to my art, I can become so engulfed in my work. It is more than just a financial means. It is a passion. Something that literally makes me smile while figuratively lifting my spirits. One of the things that set me apart from a number of actors is the fact that I come from a theatre background at an HBCU, Alabama State University, under the tutelage of Dr. Tonea Stewart. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today, as I still have a long way to go. But I am very happy with my progress and the direction I’ve chosen to take as an artist. Today I am with an agency, I am working with a manager, and am working on my upcoming musical project with my good friend Boog E down at Boog E. B Productions, LLC. I overcame my challenges by remembering that there is a bigger picture that I am trying to paint and if I stop now, will I be happy that I didn’t finish? I’ve learned, throughout my journey that I can’t do it all alone. It’s important to build a team of people you can trust. I am still working on building mine but the people I have in my corner now are amazing people with great intent. I would like the world to know that I am here to create something in this world that will impact the world in a positive light. My way of doing that is through the arts and I wouldn’t change it for the world. My upcoming album will definitely be worth the wait.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was taking my friend out on the town, I would probably first take her to a karaoke bar for some good old fun. The next day I would take her on the Grand Canyon Day Tour which takes about 13 hours. I’m sure she’d be tired so the next day we head to the mall and get a few items to wear for a night out at Mills and just hit the strip, dance, and have a great time. One of my favorite thing to do in Phoenix is the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament located in Scottsdale. That place is so awesome. I think after that my friend will be enjoying her hone away from home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to first shout out to my parents and my siblings for always having my back in my darkest days. My fellow artist and friends Nele B Wright and Nicole Asia for helping me to stay focused. I thank all of my friends for the support and my fans that have been with me since the beginning. You are the real MVPs and I appreciate you all!!
