We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Frank, why did you pursue a creative career?
Well, I’ve been an artist my whole life. Ever since I could remember, I was drawing at a very young age. I’ve done things like painting, drawing, producing beats, and making jewelry. Also, I never liked the idea of having a “standard” job/career. I fell in love with creating things, being an entrepreneur, and not doing things that are “average”. And once I found an artistic/creative path that was also lucrative, I gave into it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, it wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. There were a lot of barriers and gatekeepers that I had to get through. The only way that I’ve been continuing to prosper in this jewelry game is to keep going and to keep building that hunger for knowledge within myself. You really have to be resilient. There will always be lessons to be learned threw the curve balls of life and your personal career but it’s really just about having endurance. Especially if you want this to be a long-term thing.
And I guess that’s what I want people to know about me and the brand (GCG Jewelers). It’s the hard work and passion that I have behind it all. I am the first jeweler in my family. Most jewelers are jewelers because it was past down to them through generations. And the number of hours that I put into this literally might sound crazy to the average person. But I have such high standards that I refuse to give up on this passion and dream.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a real big fan of The Greater Good, which is a barber shop that also holds events for local artists in the city. Food-wise, I really like Bacanora and Taqueria Cajeme out in Mesa. Bar-wise, I really like Palma, Châm Pang Lanes, Melindas Alley, and Gracies. For coffee and tea, I suggest going to either Dialog or Cha Cha’s Tea Lounge.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to Dustin Garza for putting in a good word for me at Jared. I probably wouldn’t be in the jewelry industry if it weren’t for you. To my ex-manager Eddie, for giving me a chance and bringing me onto your team of jewelers early on. To my aunt and uncle Maria and Cris Nunez, for preparing me for the real world and installing so much knowledge into my subconscious. To my friends Dylan, Travis, Dre, Seb, Bryan, Mark, and Doliver, for believing in me, showing me the lavish side of life, and for helping me think bigger than I originally was. Lastly, shoutout to my parents for the support and love.
