We had the good fortune of connecting with Gary Stuart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gary, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I’m 84, so the end of my professional career will end in the next ten or so years. By then I hope to have written thirty books, closed my law practice, finished my writing compendium, and made somebody’s best seller list. I’m in the Arizona Lawyers Hall of Fame. Now I’d like to be in the Arizona Literary Hall of Fame. But sadly, there isn’t one. Maybe I’ll start one and nominate myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Trial lawyers are trained in the law to tell their client’s stories. When a client comes to your office, they want to tell you their story. It’s your job to tell that story from a legal perspective and in a way that resolves their legal issue. But authors are trained to tell their own story. The difference is profound. Over a thirty year span I moved from telling my client’s stories to telling my own.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m lucky to live in two places. We live in Phoenix from October to May and in Placitas New Mexico from May to October. In Phoenix, I’d show a visitor the trail up Piestewa Peak, dinner at the Phoenix City Grill or Beckett’s Table. And show them the Phoenix park systems, Chase Field, and The Herberger. But if we were in New Mexico, we’d have dinner at El Pinto in Albuquerque and drive up to Santa Fe to the Plaza, or the Valles Caldera, or the Chama River and Acequia. But mostly, we’d eat at home and talk about traveling, books, and the good ole days.
