Meet Halie DeRossett | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Halie DeRossett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Halie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I found my passion for photography, it was like I was in a different world and I was seeing everything differently. Before photography, I would look at a flower and see a flower. After finding my passion, I look at a flower and see all the pictures that I can take of it. From seeing all different angles that I can take of a flower, I realized how much more that I can do with photography and that really opened my eyes to being more creative. I was seeing more beauty in everything around me. Another reason why I love being artistic is when I’m photographing portraits. With my portraits, I don’t like sticking to one certain area of portraiture. I love photographing families, maternity, graduation pictures, business headshots, etc. With these types of photography, I’m able to show how a person looks like when they don’t have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Along with that, I love working with models and creating projects that produce great images with our ideas. For example, I got done with a family session that was Cinderella themed. I don’t always see that with other photographers. Being different with my portraiture work shows how creative I can be and hopefully inspires someone else to follow their creative dreams. With that being said, another reason why I love being an artist is to see the smiling faces when I capture a session. In a world that we live in, being able to capture a smile that can last a lifetime and holds a meaning is one of the greatest creations anyone can make. Being able to capture beauty through a handheld object is the major reason why I decided to pursue my photography dream.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I’m most proud of and excited about is how much I can offer to my clients with my photography ideas, Let me explain. So, I have been wanting to travel Az more lately and I have great locations far. With traveling, I’m offering sessions in Flagstaff and Sedona, along with surrounding areas. I’m excited about traveling around Az photographing my clients. I think this will be a great journey with my photography. Another part as to what my ideas are for photography, I have so many creative ideas for my sessions that I can’t wait to show my clients. For example, there was a trend with photographers photographing their clients on an air mattress. I decided to go about my own route of this idea and host styled shoots with an air mattress at a variety of locations. I’m excited about all the creative ideas that I have for my photography, basically! How I got to where I’m at was a bumpy road, there’s no lie about that. Networking was the main part of how I built myself. I began to understand how to run a business throughout time. I learned how to edit my images better and more presentable. I have learned to photograph better with networking. As the months went along, I have put more time behind the scenes of my business compared to when I first started. It wasn’t easy building a photography business. There’s many hours being put into research. I overcame challenges by taking a deep breathe and seeing how I can fix the situation in a positive way. There was many lessons that I learned along the way. The biggest one was to have a contract BEFORE the session! I’m always creating more ways to be creative and adventurous for my photography!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow great question! A little while ago, I have found many locations in Az for photography. Most of them are abandoned towns or just really cool areas that are completely destroyed. I have been wanting to go on road trips to these destinations to photograph the landscape and other objects lying around. With going on road trips, of course there’s going to be food. I have not done much research as for food restaurants, but I’m sure that we’ll find some along the way. I have found this really cool city in Az called Tuba City. In this city, there’s dinosaur tracks! I’ve been wanting to go check them out. People may say that Arizona is boring, but it really isn’t.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s lots of people that I want to give a shout out to. First off, I want to give a shout out to Colleen with Mermaids in the Desert Photography. She’s such an awesome friend that has helped me out with my Christmas sessions back in November. She always lights up the room with her brilliant ideas and great personality. Colleen also helped me look for locations for my Christmas sessions. We drove around Mesa by Salt River and a few other areas. Next, Harlan, aka HF Cone, and Hunter for allowing me to be at their networking events to be working with models. I have met new models and even got published with some of my work! I would love to name each and every model, but there’s A LOT! To all the models that have worked with me in the past, shout out to you guys for all the hard work that you do! My friends and family deserve recognition, as well. Thank you to everyone mentioned for helping me build my photography!
