We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Zebro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heidi, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
Looking back, I believe the greatest lesson my husband, Dave and I taught our three sons, Tyler, Josh and Jordan was to not use the word “can’t”. When they were toddlers and would look up to us and say, “I can’t get this toy to work”, we would gently correct them to ask “can you help me to get my toy to work?”. We wanted our children to be empowered and accountable. We know the power of words, and not using the word “can’t” was a lesson we could easily implement. Another example of this lesson is when the boys were in elementary school, I had picked them up from school and as we were driving home, Tyler, our oldest, said “we can’t run in the halls at school”, this gave me the opportunity to explain, yes, you actually can run in the halls if you want to, but there will be consequences. You don’t run in the halls because you choose to follow the rules. You make that choice. By the time the boys reached high school, they rarely said, can’t. They looked at most situations knowing they had a choice, they were the ones in control. I believe that being accountable for your actions is the fastest way to grow and thrive both personally and professionally. Recognizing the power of never saying “I can’t” has served me well. I am far less reactive, more thoughtful, more effective and solution driven.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My position of Vice President of Operations at DeLex Realty is an exciting one. DeLex Realty has 800 REALTORS, in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, and it is our passion to effectively support these Real Estate Business Owners’ businesses. The DeLex Realty vision is, “We Are Dedicated to Your Success”. This vision aligns with me personally, which is why I believe I am effective in this position. It is a privilege to work with the best REALTORS in the industry, and be a small part of their success. DeLex Realty has big plans for the next 3 to 5 years, we are focused, prepared and are committed to meeting them. My position allows me to take an idea, bring clarity to it, create the initiative and action plan, and then, working with our team, strategically implement it. Man, it just doesn’t get any better than that. The best lesson I learned in my career was that anything is possible. Once you know and empower that confidence, you automatically think bigger and accomplish more. An experienced, solution driven team focusing on a single goal can accomplish anything, DeLex Realty is proving that every single day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Valley is a wonderful place for people to explore whether you live here or are just visiting. There are so many locally owned, interesting and unique restaurants. My husband and I try something new a couple of times a month. I suggest just playing on Google’s “restaurant near me” or Yelp. Arizona is known for it’s hiking trails, I recommend South Mountain, these are free and you can find the perfect trail for your level of experience. You can spend an hour walking in nature or a half of a day, whatever fits your schedule. Spending time in nature, then having dinner and a cocktail on a restaurants patio is the perfect way to spend time with a friends or family.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the most influential mentors in my career was David Alley. Back in the 1990’s David was the Arizona Republic’s Advertising Director. I started my career working on a Advertising Sales Team as the Team’s Advertising Coordinator. David oversaw 450+ employees and was responsible for creating and reaching the annual multi-million dollar advertising budget. David was available to every employee, even someone like me; where there were three layers of management separating us. When I had an issue or concern, David was available, listened to me, then took the time to walk me through the explanation allowing me to see things from a larger view. David pushed me out of my comfort level, inviting me to be on project teams and focus groups inside the Arizona Republic. Most important, David held me accountable to implement any and all ideas I brought to the team. I credit David for pushing me discover my both my creative and solution based thinking. What a gift that has turned out to be.
