We had the good fortune of connecting with Isela Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isela, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As an independent journalist, my news business helps the community to be better informed, to know the truth of the facts, of what is happening in our world, it impacts that we have an intelligent and empowered community, because whoever is informed, empowered. I inform through my social networks, digitally, so I consider that my followers in my networks can find out what interests them in their community, specifically, my audience is a greater percentage of Latinos, and living in states united, for them it is very important to be informed and to have data and videos, stories of people from their country, for them that is of great importance, because they feel connected to their roots.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
being bold, saying things up front, speaking the truth, and helping people in whatever way I can, I think have made me different, and working tirelessly, always being a journalist 24/7 has made me have success, because I think that to be a reporter, you have to be passionate about this profession, here there are no schedules, there are no holidays, there are no weekends, when important or tragic events happen, we have to be there, at the foot of the canyon, and although have people who work with me, I like to do the work, I always carry my camera, my tripod, and microphones with me to record anytime, anywhere. If you ask me if it has been easy, I tell you that it has not been easy at all, because as a woman I face many challenges, I had to break the glass ceiling, as many women have had to do in our professions, where I gave preference to men, I have fought for my spaces and literally I did it on many occasions, where they did not want to recognize me as Director of a media outlet, but only sat the male directors of media outlets in the first seats. On one occasion, I sat next to one of them and told him, even if they don’t want to give me this place, I’ll take it, because they are also Director… and so many stories of this type. I trained, traveled to Cuba and took a diploma of Gender and empowerment of women, in times when these issues were not discussed, I was one of the pioneers as a reporter. there were already other feminist women, but not as reporters. So I am one of the people who do not give up and I have left that legacy to my daughter, and I always say that everything is possible, the sky is the limit.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in Tucson, Arizona, my favorite place is downtown, the historic buildings, I do the same thing when my friends visit me, I invite them to eat downtown, and another place where I would like to return is Pinetop, and Bisbee, two beautiful places, of which I have pleasant memories of my life, of happy times.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My greatest inspiration in my life story, as a professional and as a single mother, has been my daughter. She is my inspiration, my engine, the one who encourages me to continue fighting, to continue working and to contribute my grain of sand to society, with my knowledge, and the truthful information, that I offer to my followers.
