We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Locust-Provencio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, what do you attribute your success to?
Passion aka Love. You’ve got to love what you’re doing. You’ve got to love what it involves. I love a great tasting coffee and I love people. There’s so much joy in bringing both together. I believe that is why Provencio Coffee is successful.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Aside from starting my coffee business, I have spent the past 20 years in the behavior health field. I have had the opportunity through various roles in various settings ( i.e. foster care, residential settings, behavioral health facilities, and education), to work with and support children, ages birth to 17, who have endured behavioral, social-emotional, and/or academic challenges. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Arizona State University in 2003 and a Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Phoenix in 2013. My most recent accomplishment that I was excited to be a part of was developing and implementing a trauma-informed curriculum for a local school, division-wide. You can ask almost anyone I’ve worked with in this field, coffee was definitely a part of my building relationships with others. Throughout the years, I’ve been encouraging self-care practices. It wasn’t easy to create the balance I needed between my personal and professional life. I had to continually learn about me and implement strategies that were helpful and not harmful to my overall health and well-being. I consider having coffee with a friend or a co-worker as one of my favorite self-care practices. I would want the world to know that taking a moment to sit and connect with another is vital for the mind, body and soul…and if you need help doing that, just add coffee.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Phoenix is never boring. If I had a best friend visiting, the first thing we’d do is make some coffee at home and spend time catching up and introducing any new music to each other. We’d go have breakfast or lunch at Sunny’s Diner in Tempe or we’d enjoy the live DJ while eating at Brunch n Sip in Phoenix. We’d go on a walk around Papago Park and we would most likely be making plans to check out live RnB music bands at various night clubs in the valley.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course, there are many people who have mentored me and encouraged me to take the necessary steps to build Provencio Coffee. I could mention people all day, but I will give credit to my parents. They are the people who created the coffee culture in my life. Growing up in my parents’ home, we kept a daily routine to keep a full pot brewed at all times. They welcomed visitors on a daily basis and people knew to first make a cup of coffee before any conversation began. In my parents home, I learned that coffee is not just about the intensity of flavor, the aroma, or the wake-up kick it can give you. Coffee is about getting along in life. Coffee taught me how to listen, how to understand, and how to build connections with others. I learned a lot about people and their love for coffee. That was the coffee culture in our home. Thanks to my parents, I’ve been able to create a coffee culture that can continue to build connections between people, while enjoying great tasting coffee, one sip at a time.
