We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Grimes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Constantly wanting to better my self and my work. This is something that artists struggle with constantly and truly a toxic trait that artistic minds carry with them. I tend to have phases of being stressed about constantly wanting to better my skills and always be having my recent work blow my older work out of the water. And what you have to swallow is that a lot of the times that just won’t be the case. I have expectations of certain photoshoots that I do and it hurts when they don’t end up being exactly like they were in my head but constantly pushing myself for more and better art has gotten me where I am today.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started photography just like anyone else, taking horrible pictures of flowers in my backyard on auto mode and thinking that its not that hard. I fell in love with it but you start to see you get better relatively quick if you stick with photography but there is a wall that you will hit creatively that a lot fewer people have the drive to climb over. There are a lot of people who can take pictures but being a professional photographer takes a great understanding of all variables included in the process.
One day I just had that itch to shoot and my mom convinced my sister to take me to a car show in Scottsdale. She didn’t want to do that at all obviously but I still remember to this day multiple photos that I took that day. I saw a R35 GTR that day for the first time and was siked about being able to take a photo of it while the owner was still sitting inside the car probably annoyed about this dumb kid taking a photo. Little did I know, because I stuck with photography and gave it my all, I would be known for photos I have taken of multiple of the most popular GTR’s in AZ. I went from taking pictures of cars at events to then doing private photoshoots with the car at select locations to then letting the love for cars fully consume me and start building my own vehicles and taking photos of them.
There are lots of speedbumps along the way but I am actively building my coolest vehicle to date with the help of everything I have done in the past. It all adds up!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have been vegan for 8 years now and would love to show them to the places PHX has to offer. We would start the day off with Dark Hall Coffee and have a relaxing morning out at their patio. Continue on to lunch at Green or Pizza Heaven!
We would grab some food and water and disappear into the AZ high country and hike/ camp in all of Arizona’s beautiful areas. On the way back into the valley stop at Earth Plant based Cuisine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure of sharing a life with. Candice McEvoy is my other half and is so incredibly supportive with my photography and vehicle building lifestyle. She is what keeps me pushing forward and who I strive to impress everyday.
