Meet Jane Spicer | CEO and co-founder of Daphne’s Headcovers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Spicer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jane, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The two most important factors behind my success are honesty and tenacity. My Mum (Daphne, our company’s namesake) taught me the importance of both. It is so important to be honest with each other, our customers and our employees. Without it bit by bit, day by day one’s credibility will erode and nothing, no deal or sale is worth it.
Tenacity means showing up each day, every day, every darn day. Business is a marathon and if you are lucky (and hard working) you will build something meaningful. Without being tenacious you just won’t make it. Show up when you are tired, show up when people have treated you poorly, show up when it feels as though the tide is against you.
By showing up in this space that is Daphne’s Headcovers for over 47 years I’ve been able to create a company and products with a great reputation and a global footprint. It’s the unglamorous day in and day out that gets you there.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started my first company when I was 10 years old. I asked my Mum (she was born and raised in England which is why I call her Mum). for a sailboat and she said “think of a business and earn it yourself. I came up with toys for Christmas. She taught me how to design, cut and sew very simple toys. When I made enough to fill a garbage bag, I would walk around the neighborhood selling them. I did this over and over until I bought my little 11-foot sailboat. The toys morphed into puppets and at an arts and crafts fair someone suggested we make golf club covers. At first, we thought it was a silly idea. Then my Mum bribed me and told me if I made and sold enough, she would buy me a car ( I was almost 16) so I was in! I created some samples and went to the golf shop at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix and made my first sales pitch (not a very good one) and Daphne’s Headcovers was born!
Being a 16-year-old female sales rep in a male dominated world was tough at times. but there were many decent people along the way that gave me tips or introduced me to contacts that helped me. It was never easy, and I faced a lot of challenges such as security guards not letting me on property as I was too young to be a sales rep. Or buyers telling me “These things will never sell” but I kept going. At first my only goal was to earn the car (and I did, a 1973 VW bright red bug). Once I had earned the car, I kept going at first for spending money and then with the realization that I always wanted to be my own boss.
When times were really hard, I always felt it was the Universe asking me, “Jane, how bad do you want it?” My answer always came back as” I REALLY want it “and so I would pick myself up and learn how to work harder and smarter.
I sought a lot of counsel along the way from my seasoned businesspeople, who were always willing to help.
I want people to know that if they really want something they can get it. It’s going to be hard and take a lot of work and it will be worth it. You have to learn to be honest with oneself and watch the stories you are telling yourself. If you are creating obstacles about why your business won’t work, then it probably won’t.
Daphne’s Headcovers is made up of a lot of really hard working, creative and fun-loving people. I’ve tried to create a light culture, so the office is joyful while keeping our eye on excellence in quality, customer service and the way we treat each other.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hiking in Arizona is amazing and so are our restaurants, golf courses and spa’s.
If my best friend was visiting the area we would start with a sunrise hike either in Sedona or on Tom’s Thumb in Scottsdale. Our sunrises and sunsets are the BEST. Then we would tee it up for a round of golf at one of our many gorgeous courses. The Arizona Biltmore has a special place in my heart so we might start there or if time was short, we might play the short course at Mountain Shadows. Dinner that evening would be on a patio with a gorgeous sunset view, Maybe Isabella’s at GrayHawk.
The next day would by yoga at my favorite studio, Harumi Yoga in North Scottsdale and then off to a spa day for a massage, lunch, other treatments and happy hour at the spa in our fluffy resort robes.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first mentor was my Mum, she guided, prodded and fiercely supported me along the way. I couldn’t have started Daphne’s Headcovers or gotten to where I am now without her.
My two children have been and continue to be my North Stars. They inspire me to be the best that I can in all aspects of my life. To show up for them as a good person doing good things is a constant source of motivation in my life.
