Meet Janna Taylor | maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Janna Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. There’s nothing more rewarding than doing something on your own and making a “thing” out of it, whether that’s working on a small project, putting down roots, creating something, raising a family, or starting and running a business. In Cowgirl Clay Co’s case, the business aspect of things followed the art & creation, and that’s what makes this such a rewarding investment of my time and business sense.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My style is natural, neutral, and earthy. You won’t find many colors or designs in my work that you can’t find in nature. I draw inspiration constantly from the beauty and depth of the desert around us, and that translates into different but cohesive forms, which shows in my work. I have a flair for sculpting and creating one of a kind pieces, but my bread and butter is in neutral, simple pieces that are more universal. I like creating earrings that can be worn by many types of wearers. My goal is for my accessories to accentuate the beauty and personality of the human wearing (rocking!) them.
I’ve found that using my hands to create something that others love is a big deal for me. It took me a while to really grasp and embrace this, but there’s a killer combo of the labor of using my hands to MAKE something + the pure joy that comes from experience that finished/final product + the absolute pride that comes with others feeling that joy too… that’s the sweet spot for me. That’s my formula for success in my creator brain, and that’s the juice that keeps me at it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d absolutely have to hit up the local market scene. There are so many talented and unique makers and business owners in Tucson who showcase their awesomeness in a market setting.
I’d love to share the beauty of the west side with them – our home is nestled in the Tucson Mountains in Saguaro National Park, and I cannot think of a more breathtaking moment than standing right in our backyard and soaking in all the feelings (warm sun, dancing wind, beautiful sounds, incredible smells – WOW).
I’d need to take them to grab a latte at Decible Coffee Works, croissants at Ren Coffeehouse, boba tea at Ding Tea, and dinner at Maynard’s. We’d wrap the night sipping on whiskey and scotch at Batch.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout two of my fellow Tucon-based clayers, Coy Creative and Desert Reign Co. The women (and mothers!) behind these two brands inspired me to embrace my own ambitions and just go for it. I also have to shoutout my husband, Jimmy. He supports me in my ambitions and encourages me to follow my heart.
