We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Mayer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I was working a job that I didn’t really enjoy anymore. I was traveling the country for work, and wasn’t really in a single place long enough to make and keep relationships. I met some really great people, but would wnd up having to leave for another project shortly after befriending people or the like. It was frustrating.

So, when my employment at the time brought me back out to Arizona in January of 2020, I decided to put my money where my mouth was and Calculated Kinetics was born.

I’ve always been fascinated by mechanical things. There’s something raw and appealing to me about them. I always knew I wanted to do something with firearms and by the end of February 2000, I was looking at the first CAD drawings of one of our concepts. It’s a memory I’ll have for the rest of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I head up Future Concepts at Calcated Kinetics. Some of the ideas that come to mind are directly related to combat experience as both a Soldier, and a PSD Contractor in my 20’s. Some things have nothing yo do with them and simply solve problems.

What set us apart from others? That’s a unique question, and it’s multi-faceted. Firstly, the most difficult thing I needed to overcome as a person was to look around long enough at what I was doing, what I was experiencing, and identify things that I didn’t like about any of it.

Once you identify what you’re dealing with, you can more than likely be assured that others are in the same boat you are…dealing with whatever it is. Look to see if a solution already exists. If you can’t find one, you might be on yo something. There’s a bit more to the process than that before you go throwing money at something, but you get the idea.

Developing products isn’t easy, nor is it inexpensive. Identifying all the steps it takes to bring something from concept to creation is quite an arduous task when you’ve never done it before. At times, it was an absolute headache. The single greatest piece of advice I’ve learned is that if you need help from others, hire the person that does whatever it is you’re looking to have done, for a living. If they don’t feed themselves based on the type of work you’re seeking, find someone who does. Read that last part again.

Our brand breaks the “you gotta think outside the box” nonsense. The people who spout that live within a preconceived set of boundaries. There are no boundaries.

I’m reminded of a quote by D.H. Lawrence: “I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough never having felt sorry for itself.” So, think wildly.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m kind of a homebody, but I’m sure there’d be some drunken night vision shooting at some point in the middle of the desert…completely safe, or IDK.

All my friends would be content with a suppressed AK and an MRE…accompanied by an IR laser light show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I’m so thankful that G-d has given me some great ideas that we’ve been able to capture and bring to fruition. G-d, I love you.

Tyler, my business partner. Without him, we wouldn’t be anywhere close to where we are. I’m incredibly fortunate that G-d brought us together. He’s been an asset in every sense of the word…as a business partner, and a friend. Tyler, I love you.

My mom, Marcie. She never rooted against me when I was willing to risk it all. Even when I was up against extremely poor odds. She let me believe in greatness, fail at times (I know that must’ve been tough sometimes – and equally hysterical at times too). Mom, I love you.
