We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Tretta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeffrey, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Every time I have struggled with he sense that I should move on from the ups and downs of the music businesses I am reminded of why I initially started a recording studio. It’s a passion and it needs to continue to be. I pick who I want to work with and when, I don’t let the business dictate my life and I do not take on projects that I will not enjoy. In the early years I had to take anything coming my way, this lead to a poor product and a lack of quality and excitement in my work. It’s on my to keep going and it’s on my to make sure I’m fueling a reason to.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being in this business is NOT easy, as I am dealing with other peoples art as their “first listener”. Bands and artists spend months or even years writing songs and it’s my job to be their first ears. The whole reason we record music is to listen to it. As their listener I interpret and find a direction for the recording. Sometimes it’s a harsh reality that I have to give to an artist and sometimes it’s just tweaking a bit. In he end I want to give each music maker the best product I can and make them sound better than imagined. Every song has its challenges and we continue working in the studio until we get it right. I want the band or artist to be proud of what we have accomplished and want to show it to the world. My studio is rather small and intimate, which comes out in my recordings as a fluid process where artists can focus on the music and not feel the pressure of being in a business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hiking is a must in AZ as weather permits.I would take a trip through the superstitions and drop by four peaks brewery afterwards. I’ve also always enjoyed our abundance of fishing holes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is to all of the bands I have worked with. Each of them brought a challenge and forced me to be better. Half of this business is managing personalities and abilities. After each record or song I learn something new that I carry onto the next session.
