We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Messina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenn, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor which has helped me succeed is being true to my own values and beliefs and to to share my opinion on the (sometimes controversial) topics around health, dieting, body image and parenting. My community also loves to share in my successes and my struggles. Being a real person matters. Perfection doesn’t exist so I make sure to show the hard parts of being a women, mother and business owner. Challenging the status quo with regards to health helps spark discussion and I welcome differing opinions. Being present online with quality content is also key. Learning from my audience and determining what they want to know has helped me in the creative process.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a Registered Dietitian, my practice pivoted tremendously through the pandemic. I went from 100% in person, to seeing clients across the province of B.C virtually in a matter of months. The pandemic also brought the importance of HEALTH to the forefront of people’s minds. What does it mean to be healthy and how can people support their health from a wholistic perspective (over and above just diet and exercise). I have learned that in order to survive in private practice you have to be able to pivot your business and be flexible in your approach. The other thing I have learned is that sometimes you have to just dive in. That means ditching the comfort of a steady paycheck and benefits to be motivated to work hard to succeed. You can’t half ass business for self.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live in beautiful North Vancouver, B.C. When a friend comes to visit, it wouldn’t be complete without a hike in the mountains, exploring the secret trails, creeks, and rivers in our area. Next it would be time to visit Deep Cove, the tiny seaside community in which I live. Maybe grab a donut from “Honey’s Donuts” and head out for a paddle board or kayak around the bay.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to all the women who have opened up their homes to me. To allow me to help support them and guide them with raising their children and making peace with their own bodies.
