We had the good fortune of connecting with John Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe you need to follow your passion and chase opportunities. On the business front, I have taken risks that panned out and some that did not. A growing business is exciting, but there are plenty of battles along the way. Who to hire, how to market, how to create budgets, how to make smart financial decisions and many other facets that make the entrepreneurial journey thrilling. I did not always make the best decisions and sometimes those financial consequences were significant. Although, I learned valuable lessons that have helped me throughout my personal and professional life.

When things on the business front became challenging, I embraced the adversity. To me, smooth roads are just not as fun. Living in Phoenix, the most rugged roads took me to some of the most beautiful places. Life and business are no different.

One time, I developed a new product and wanted to gain exposure through a massive infomercial. Well, that did not go as planned and the company took a big loss. Instead of suffering over my losses, I went back to the drawing board. By learning from my past, I came up with a better idea to find the right partners and team to surround myself with. This was challenging, but in the end, the adversity is where we can learn, gather momentum, and keep charging.

Keeping things in perspective and remembering that some of the roughest terrains lead to the most beautiful places is key to a successful journey in life and business. This is the truth I believe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A person I would like to thank for contributing to my success is Bob O’Leary. Bob was not only a friend of mine, but also an incredible mentor. We shared an office space for 12 years and frequently grabbed lunch after we parted ways.

Bob witnessed me experience 4 different business adventures before landing with Bullworker and he was always encouraging. With his support, I was able to find something that allowed me to follow my passion as well as make a living (Bullworker).

I chatted with him 6 months before he passed and was still impressed by his ability to be a sounding board and conversation skills. I will always value his opinion on all topics ranging from personal to professional life (spirituality, business, everyday life, etc.). I appreciate the way Bob listened to me with respect and curiosity. He asked the most thought-provoking questions that challenged me in a positive and constructive way.

His influence on me was invaluable. He allowed me to walk through my conclusions to my own questions before offering his advice. When I became involved with Bullworker in 1999, Bob was more than willing to be a product tester and offer me guidance and feedback on operating the business.

My father once told me to be receptive enough to different opinions and sort through them in order to blend solutions together. With the combination of my ideas and the thought-provoking nature of Bob, I was able to develop tools and solutions that people still use to this day!

If I could have one more conversation with Bob, I would give him a genuine “Thank you” and a big hug. Not just your normal “Thank you”, but one that uses a specific inflection and warmth that the other person can feel. I am very grateful for the opportunity to know Bob and for the amazing conversations that had direction and led to results.

I have carried on his legacy and philosophy by encouraging my sons to provoke thought in others. Ask questions that give people direction. Enjoy the process and don’t always shoot from the hip. Go slow and think things through. Do not be afraid to take chances, follow your passion, and chase opportunity.

Bob was the epitome of a mentor due to his integrity, forwardness, and discernment. He will be missed.

Thanks again, Bob!
