We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnette Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johnette, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I love being creative. I think different in all aspects of life. I love to look at things from a different perspective and I think that causes me to become more artistic. I’ve always loved music, and dance came so natural to me. I can completely get engulfed into the lyrics of a song or the beat of a sound. I’ve also been in media my whole career and I love storytelling and connecting others on different platforms.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am in broadcasting. I am media content producer and News Anchor for a news talk format radio station in the Indianapolis Market (93.1 WIBC) a Freelance TV Reporter for WISHTV8 and I have a podcast called Behind The Filter. I love all things media and enjoy communicating in different platforms! I started my broadcasting career in 2005. I knew nothing. I got hired in a cluster of radio stations, by way of “knowing someone”. From there I learned and shadowed people as much as I could so that I could learn the ins and out of being on-air and editing and producing. It was not easy, it was a lot of work, networking, practicing and learning.

I want people to know that I didn’t finish college. I don’t have a career in broadcasting. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to get on TV because I needed to start in a small market and that I didn’t have a degree. As soon as someone told me I couldn’t do it I decided to change the narrative. And I did it and continue to push those boundaries.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Indy has a lot of fun places, since I am latina we definitely would visit some of the night hot spots that show my culture off. We would also be very active and try multiple yoga, pilates and group fitness places along with doing some meditation. A mix of all of it!

Places I love: Estereo Night Club, Canal Squad Indy, Big Peach Gym, F45, MVMT House, Verde and The Garden Table

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would probably say Swerk Dance Fitness. I stopped dancing for quite a while. I was going through a trial in my life and ended up in therapy and just completely lost my confidence in creating. I was introduced to the brand at a time where I lacked the love for myself, for movement and for health. They reminded me how much I loved to dance and the talent I still had and how I should continue to use it regardless of my circumstances.
