Meet Jose Malki Higuera | Fire Captain and M&M Family Orchard and Horse Boarding owner.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Malki Higuera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose Malki, how do you think about risk?
Our competitive advantage is demonstrated by education, business guidance, and community involvement. Our community is a small town only 15 miles from the
international border with Mexico; we have a more significant Hispanic population, income
ratios are significantly low, and it is imperative that we learn more than one language. The
fire department measures success as a group, not an individual. By applying this theory to
our community, we want our community to be successful, not just individuals. The
M&MFamily Orchard/ Horse Boarding provides this as we strive to make our community a
community people want to invest in, provide higher education, and live in.
Like any other business, nothing is easy, and nothing is impossible. It is not easy to turn a
regular property into a place to hold community events, venues, therapies for animal
bonding, and complex issues arise, such as applying for permits, funding, and liabilities,
though rewarding. The real question comes down to what you consider a reward. The
satisfaction of our business is heartwarming. Let me tell you; there is no better feeling than
watching vendors high-five because they sold products, watching children play in our
sunflower field, and bonding between a horse and a person in need. Our challenges will
always be funding, though we have begun to seek grants, sponsorships, and donations.
The M&M Family Orchard/Horse Boarding is dedicated to ensuring that these challenges
are subsided and predicting future outcomes to assist with growth and community
development.
What should our readers know about your business?
My name is Jose Malki Higuera. I started my career in the fire service at 18 years old and continue to work as a Fire Captain in the City of Nogales, Arizona. During my career, I
acquired many certificates in the fire service, such as rescue and leadership. I obtained a
bachelor’s degree in business management and am currently enrolled in a master’s degree
in business.
When I joined the Fire Service, I had one goal: to make a positive difference in someone’s
life. This trait of helping people has guided me to open a business in my town. My wife
Maritza Higuera and I own the M&M Family Orchard and Horse Boarding facility in Rio Rico,
Arizona. We decided to apply what I have learned over the years as a firefighter and help
people except now it is as a business owner. M&M Family Orchard provides a place for our
community to grow their business. We host events once a month, allowing people to sell
crafts, food, and beverages and start their small businesses. I provide business advice and
consulting, and my wife offers health, nutrition, and education consulting. I also provide
education on agriculture and farming with the M&M Horse Boarding with a social impact on
our community visitors.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When a relative or best friend comes to my area to visit, I have a unique little restaurant I take them visit called “Higos Cafe.” The service, food, and environment are worth every
penny. When people come to Rio Rico, I recommend visiting, of course, M&M Family
Orchard to spend time on our sunflower or lavender field and see the animals in our Horse
Boarding like the goats, pigs, and horses, our local small businesses, and fire departments.
