We had the good fortune of connecting with Jyll Ethier-Mullen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jyll, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balancing work and personal life is a challenge for most parents, especially for artists, It often requires intense focus, and a planned time to be creative. I try to set specific work hours, 3 days a week to prioritize my time with to-do lists. Of course managing creativity is hard in general, you can’t force it. My husband is a huge support system to our family and my art career. Overall, balancing my work and personal life as an artist and mother of three boys can be challenging, but with planning, it is possible to achieve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a contemporary landscape artist inspired by my surroundings, which includes the beauty of both coasts, I grew up in RI, lived in California for 12 yrs and now reside in AZ for the past 2 yrs. My most recent work is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, and the relationship between humanity and the environment including hiking and national parks.I’m really excited about this new season of artwork and where it’s taking me.The hardest challenge being a mother and an artist, there are a few years that I had to let my art aspirations rest patiently Starting a new body of work can be challenging because you’re not sure if the audience will be able to relate to the work. Which can be hard for sales, etc. It’s been a learning curve how to market your art and I feel like i’m still striving to overcome some of these challenges.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What a fun question!! Straight from the airport I would take my best friend for lunch at Pizzeria Bianco and then hit up some galleries in downtown or PHX art museum. Next day we would drive to Sedona but on the way stop at Arcosanti for a tour and some lunch. We would take a short hike when we hit Sedona hike, like Cathedral Rock and watch the sunset.
The next day we would take that steep drive to Jerome and wander around and drink some wine Caduceus Cellars .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter is my husband, as an artist you sometimes have waves of doubt and fear, and he has always grounded me and encouraged me to keep going. As a child I would say my grandparents and parents were avid supporters, from paying for my drawing and painting lessons from the age 8-15, coming to all my art shows and festivals, and buying  my art. They always believed in my talents.
I also have a few trusted art colleagues that give me constructive feedback and help me wrestle through some of my ideas.
