We had the good fortune of connecting with Kane Bassham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kane, how do you think about risk?
At the start of my career, I was making money being a freelance photographer which is all about risk. There is no real guarantee that you will be making money at the end of the day. I did that for a couple of years and nothing really started to stick and that was frustrating because I knew I had talent. I was working multiple odd jobs and freelancing on the side. In 2019 I finally got a good job shooting real estate photography and running social media pages at an agency making pretty good money, I moved my wife and son into a new home but I just still wasn’t happy with my career. Six months later I went to work, I was sitting at my desk and just decided that I’ve had enough! I quit my job the same day because I knew that everything that I dreamed about and wanted to achieve was possible….A few weeks later I almost asked for my job back. Things were hard at the beginning but I knew that giving up was never an option. I finally started to figure things out. 5 years later and I’m making 6 figures as a photographer, traveling coast to coast working with amazing companies. Now I work with celebrity clientele and people see my worth like I did back when I was scrubbing pots and taking out trash. Taking that risk of not knowing the outcome of the decisions that I made was the motivation I needed.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that keeps me busy is learning! I realized very quickly that you can’t be scared to talk about money. Therefore you have to be kinda tough when finding new clientele and looking for good work. When I first got started as a photographer I was charging $50 for a photo shoot. Now I can charge $1000 an hour. The reason I can do that is because I’ve learned that I can’t be scared to ask for the money I know my work is worth and I’m proud of that. I’m proud of the fact I can give rates and Clients will accept them without batting an eye because they know it’s worth it.

Getting to this point just takes experience, something that I preach to other photographers now is that we have to know our target clientele. If I want to make a lot of money I have to find clientele that has a lot of money. It started to be that simple when I realized I had 20 consistent clients and I was still broke all the time. So I raised my prices and found new clients, when I finally found 2 new clients I was making more money than when I had 20.

Something that I’ve learned is that you should always keep learning. Never stop finding new information and go meet new people with similar experiences that you’ve had. I’ll never forget when I would stay up all night to teach myself how to use a new software Just to add it to my Arsenal of skills.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If there’s anyone that I would have to say thank you to it would have to be my family. There were times when it really seemed like things were never going to work out in my favor but they always believed in me and encouraged me to keep faith in myself. Shout out to my wife for always staying by my side, thank you for making me breakfast after I pulled all nighters trying to learn new skills and become a better artist. Shout out to my kids giving me motivation to push myself harder everyday.
