We had the good fortune of connecting with Kareem Kamahl Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kareem Kamahl, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to start a charity for hospitalized children that could inspire and provide a source of education at the same time. So, I thought, “Hey! Comic books would be the perfect outlet to promote imagination, self-esteem, courage, and literacy to kids!”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CBR Kids provides free comic books, activity books, and novels to kids admitted to the Children’s Hospital. On average we deliver around 400 new books a month to the children which are distributed by the hospital staff. We are actively trying to increase our number of books per month to expand to more hospitals. We also have an annual holiday toy drive that donates new toys to the children as well. Starting a non-profit charity was not an easy task to achieve. A lot of time went into the research and development of the charity’s mission. There was a lot to learn to ensure we were successful as an organization. However, partnering up with others that have experience and prior success helped me overcome some of the challenges along the journey. I have also learned that believing in yourself and your mission is key to achieving success. Without it, no one else will believe in it either. I want the world to know that our charity, CBR Kids, was founded on the belief that children really are our future. We are here to show them that they have a superhero within themselves that can overcome the challenges that come their way in life. Just like the superhero characters in the comic books that they are reading!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends were visiting Denver, Colorado I would take them to Meow Wolf to visit the amazing art exhibit. After that, we would stop by Blue Oyster bar for lunch. We would definitely have to stop by Mutiny Info Cafe for coffee and comic books and then to the legendary Mile High Comics mega store for more comic book shopping. After that, we would have to stop and get tacos at SOL Mexicana Cocina. No trip to Colorado is complete without watching a sunrise in the Rocky Mountains and, an early morning drive to the peak of Mount Evans in Idaho Springs, Colorado will take care of that need.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This charity would not exist if it weren’t for the support of the community that surrounds me. This includes the small business owners that operate local comic book stores to the big corporations that donated to our charitable mission. I would also like to dedicate a shout-out to the many people that rallied behind us with monetary donations to support our cause. We would not be as successful as we are in our first year without them.
