We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, how does your business help the community?
My business impacts the rodeo community by encouraging its young ladies to be the best version of themselves. the main part of my business is coaching rodeo queens. I coach public speaking, interviews, studying and study methods, poise and modeling, appearance and wardrobe, confidence, goal setting, and personal growth. All these aspects can be applied to the “real world” that these cowgirls dive into once their pageant days are done. I have three years of working in the mental and behavioral field, and I apply the lessons I learned from this experience toward helping my clients become the best version of themselves. By allowing themselves to strive for their goals, their way, they feel more accomplished and successful – regardless of the pageant outcome. Pageants are subjective. The results could change with different judges or a different day or by wearing a different outfit… and it is so important for my clients to understand they need to take control of what they can and let loose of what they cannot control. This provides them a platform from which they can be the strongest competitor… their best self.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I strive to help my niche market (young ladies with the goal to be a rodeo queen) to be the best version of themselves. I apply my work experience in the mental and behavioral health field to coaching them to set goals, learn skills for life, and “become the best you that you can be.” These three elements have allowed me to reach 100’s of cowgirls across the United States, Canada, and Australia. I encourage them to compete at the level they set for themselves. This lets them disregard the subjectivity of the judging process – because being told you are not as good as somebody else is difficult, but being told you can be better than you were the day before is… well… less difficult. Getting where I am today as a business owner was not easy – it took persistence and dedication to my goals and my coaching methods. My goal is to help my clients become better at what they do and reach as many of their goals as possible, while winning is frosting on the cake. Overcoming my challenges took time and marketing. But the greatest asset that has allowed my business to grow? Word of mouth. My clients are happy with their results and they let others know… to the point that they have called themselves “Lil Birds” (my business is Lil Bird Promotions, LLC) and began bonding with each other at events over our coaching. Developing my coaching platform to where it is today has resulted in a roughly 92% win-rate. I have winners and 1st Runner-Ups most of the time. Still, I have learned that it is most important to be true to yourself – which is exactly what I coach to my clients. By sticking to my principles and goals, I have developed a successful niche business that I am now growing to include other aspects of coaching, like job interviewing, scholarship and college applications, and resumes for example. I want my clients to know they are incredible people who can always be better and it is a sign of strength and insight to ask for help so they can grow. Lil Bird Promotions, LLC was so named because I wanted to help others grow, fly high, and reach their goals.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad deserves credit, as does my best friend. When I started out, I was simply giving advice to fellow 4-H horse club members who wanted to be rodeo queens. (4-H is America’s largest youth development organization. It encourages leadership for life.) This practice slowly grew to a paid opportunity, which grew to a hobby, which my dad saw as a chance to turn into a business – and he not only encouraged me to do so, but helped me lay the foundation to make it happen. I started coaching young ladies across the U.S., Canada, and Australia – all virtually – and have been doing that for the past eight years. But I have been coaching for 25 years. My best friend has always been there for me when I have run into issues with how to expand my curriculum or dealt with a troublesome situation. She has offered advice from the perspective of a parent, as well as a former rodeo queen. Between my dad’s mentorship as a business owner himself, and my best friend’s support and encouragement as a friend, parent, and knowledgeable person in the rodeo queen world, I have been able to build a successful niche business. Last year, I coached Miss Indian Rodeo, Miss Teen Rodeo USA, Miss Rodeo Canada, and a Top Ten finisher for Miss Rodeo America. For 2022, I coached the 1st Runner-Ups for Miss Teen Rodeo USA and Miss Indian Rodeo, plus Miss Rodeo Canada and five of the Top Ten finishers for Miss Rodeo America – including the 2nd Runner-Up. The support of my family, friends, and the rodeo queens I have worked with and their families will continue to help my business thrive.
