We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathy, how does your business help the community?
Equips civilians to become Veteran Champions, that is people to develop mutually beneficial activities and services that improve quality of lie, workforce or community. Key examples are excelling at hiriing and retaining Veterans and starting military ministries in places of worship.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our country does not proactively teach civilians how to be Veteran Champions. That is … help people understand military culture, how to support Service members post-military transition, the value of and how to start. military ministries, how to use military skills translators to decipher best fit jobs for military, etc. Lawyers, health care providers and educators (college and public school) can also do substantive things for military-connected people. My book, “Beyond Thank you for Your Service: the Veteran Champion handbook for civilans” is full of practical ways to become Veteran Champions.

This is not easy as it is in the “early adaptor” stages. The business case for hiring military is well understood and many more employers are investing in it to bring Veterans onboard yet Veteran underemployment is about 15 times greater than for civilians. Plus, mostly larger employers are investing. Small and medium size businesses will also benefit from this investment in knowledge, time and money. Veterans are more mission-focused, productive, loyal than non Veteran counterparts. They excel in large, med and small businesses but may be more comfortable and adapt more quickly in medium and smaller businesses.

Military ministries are relatively unknown. They bring together military-connected people to foster practical support and foster spiritual resiliency. Key benefits are decreasing social isolation, promoting a sense of belonging and learning about Veteran community resources. Ideally suited to facilitate these fellowship groups are Veterans or others who understand military culture and love our military. These groups are established and devleoped in partnership with clergy.

Lessons learned: Celebrate small wins. Provide speeches to build awareness. Pace yourself. Perseverance.
