We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin May and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been working a corporate job all of my career and really wanted to work for myself. I love to travel so thought owning a website would be a perfect fit since I could work from anywhere in the world. I wanted to stay in the real estate field since I had spent the prior 15 years in commercial real estate.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started LandHub with no previous knowledge of how to build or run a website. It took a lot of sleepless nights and weekends working on it as side hustle to my full time job. Then CoStar, a $1B commercial real estate firm bought my largest competitor and formed a monopoly of websites called Land.com, serving the land listing industry. We pivoted and changed our business model to be the “nice guys” since we really wanted to help people and not just on profit at any cost like our new competitor did. It paid off and many, many clients left the 800 pound gorilla that was treating them badly to become clients of our little start up. What I learned is that tenacity and doing what you love and enjoy (helping people) without focusing on the money is the path to success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live and work in Tucson and take all new visitors to the Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park. I know a great picnic spot with a short hike to petroglyphs that are surrounded by saguaro cacti. Next is a bike ride on the loop, which has hundreds of miles of paved bike paths. Lunch or dinner at El Chollo, Tucson’s oldest mexican restaurant, with a prickly pear margarita is also a must.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father gave a book called The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale when I first graduated from college and landed my first sales job. My dad always wanted to be an entrepreneur but settled for a. job as a telephone repairman and seemed to always regret not starting his own company.
