We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Topps and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I am the CEO of Top Event Planners (2004) and Top Resume Coaches (2021). The idea of both business came from my family and friends that I was serving. I planned my very first event at age 9 and the same project management skill set I use as a NASA Engineer, I utilize when creating, designing and executing events. My family and friends would always say, you are really good we should pay you.

When the pandemic hit, all of our events got cancelled and/or postponed. Right before our state shutdown, I volunteered to do resume reviews at the University of Houston. I started off with just 3 students by the end of the session I was doing a complete session with all attendees. Again, I heard, you are really good at this. You need to charge us. Then a few weeks later I was journaling and God revealed to me that I needed to open Top Resume Coaches immediately. Of course, I am like I need to plan: write a business plan, develop a website, get a new phone number….At the end of my journaling God gave me 15 days to jump and start. A year later we have changed so many lives and assisted clients get to their next level in their careers and as our student clients applied for internships, scholarships and help get their first jobs out of college.

In addition, we are back planning beautiful events.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

The thing that sets me apart is that I help make people and things better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many spots in Houston. I am a foodie so we would do our first in with a home cooked meal and then we would hit the town. The Houston cultural is diverse. So we would experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Houston.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Special shout out to all who let me plan and execute events at church and school.

Special shout out to the engineering students at the University of Houston for allowing me to help them with my resumes and challenging me to begin my resume coaching business.
