Meet Kristen Green | Designer & Nurse Midwife

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from a small town in Rhode Island. I started art classes when I was about 7-years-old and I immediately fell in love with drawing and painting. My art teacher had a very big and very encouraging personality which captivated me as a small child. I distinctly remember her asking me, “do you want to go into design?” and me, not really knowing what I would become, shrugged and carried on with my work, not thinking much of it. After I graduated high school, I embarked on a very different career trajectory and didn’t pick up any pencils or brushes for years. Busy studying and then starting a career in the medical field, art fell by the wayside. However, during the Covid pandemic, with all the stresses of being on the frontline, I realized I needed to find an outlet to unwind and decompress — and that is when I rekindled my passion to create.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am just starting out in the surface design field — literally dipping my toes into the water. I am trying to find my style and I am excited at the prospect of trying to build and develop my portfolio and brand. I work in a variety of mediums including acrylic, watercolor, and pen & ink. Each medium gives way to a very different aesthetic and I am still learning what works and what doesn’t. I have also been teaching myself Adobe photoshop and illustrator to make my artwork into repeating patterns. That part has been the most challenging because I have absolutely no background in any of the Adobe softwares. At the end of the day, it’s been extremely rewarding to dabble in something so different from my day-to-day work as a midwife and I am very excited to see where this journey will take me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t really have a place that I consider to be my home. I am very much a nomad and have lived in 6 states and traveled to 23 countries (so far). However, I am in the process of moving back to the Navajo Nation which was previously my home for about 5 years. I am really looking forward to returning and being able to get back outside in the desert to hike and camp. Whenever someone comes to visit, I love to show them Canyon de Chelly — in my opinion, one of the most breathtaking spots in the Southwest. The whole Four Corners Region has so much history and so many cool locations it’s impossible to break it down in a one week itinerary but I also have a special place in my heart for New Mexico. You cannot beat the green chiles or Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give all the recognition to my first art teacher, Solace Loven. She is truly such an inspiration and I cannot even begin to tell her how grateful I am she came into my life.
