Meet Lady Brye Blacklidge | Quartermaster for Bleedn Heart Cove

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lady Brye Blacklidge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lady Brye, what principle do you value most?
Bleedn Heart Cover, and myself, aim to serve our community. Whether that’s as an entertainer or something as simple as making some one smile, we want to better the world around us.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always loved to dress up. As a child I use to find things around my home, such as old clothes, belts, tape, basically anything I could get my hands on. I’d make wings using pillow cases and coat hangers because I wanted to be a fairy one year for a renaissance festival. The wings turned out terrible, but I was proud of my creation. My Godmother would humor my creativity sometimes by sewing anything I needed. My Halloween costumes were handmade with love! I continued my obsession with costuming throughout my life, eventually finding Steampunk. I’ve been apart of several cosplay groups around Arizona. I’ve loved every group I’ve been apart of, and I’ve met so many amazing people.
My pirate journey started four years ago. I work many conventions, and I happened to meet the crew at an event. I was hooked from the get go.
I specialize in thrift store cosplays. I do not know how to sew despite my mother being a quilter. I’ve just never dived into that world, and instead my costumes are almost entirely thrifted. I want people to know that creating good costumes are within reach, and doesn’t have to be super expensive. I like to do break downs of my outfits on my social media of how much every aspect of my outfit costed and where I found the pieces.
Bleed’n Heart Cove, my pirate crew, was created to educate, inspire, entertain and create happiness. We were formed with the goal to become a nonprofit. We do events around town, and we work with places such as the Reid Park Zoo, Celtic Fest, and Tucson Comic con to create amazing moments. You or your child can (foam) sword fight a pirate, or get your picture taken with a mermaid! We are always trying to find ways make people smile. We have worked to become a staple of the community here in Tucson, and we hope to continue spreading positivity for many years to come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For some context, I live on the edge of Tucson and Vail. I’m very into hiking. I’d definitely show them mount Lemmon and the little town on top, Summerhaven. We would eat some pizza at the Cookie Cabin, and take a good hike around the creek beds, trees, and wildlife that adorn the local ski island. I have a passion for specialty coffee. I’d do a tour of the local roasters and coffee shops around Tucson. My favorite coffee shop being Yellow Brick Coffee. We would take some day trips to Some little towns such as Bisbee, Patagonia, and of course the historic town of Tombstone. I’m a fan of natural formations, and I would love to show some one the local caves. Colossal cave, and Kartchner caverns are amazing glimpses into some of the hidden wonders of the desert. While we are in this part of the desert, we would have to go see the Saguaro national forest. Maybe we would even do a little picnic depending on the time of year. As far as food goes, cause we all have to eat, my favorite place in town is Caravan Grill. I’m a sucker for shawarma, and this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant satisfies my cravings every time! I’ve lived in Tucson for a decent chunk of my life, I can always find new things to do, and suggest some amazing experiences for people who are passing through out little paradise.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first would like to give a shout out to my Dad. I’m a weird child, with off beat dreams, and my dad has supported me every step of the way. It’s not everyday that your kid becomes a pirate. Haha! Next shoutout is to my Godmother. She sewed most, if not all my childhood costumes together. She’s the reason I have the confidence to create these outfits. I would also like to give a shout out to my Captain, and all of my crew. We make so many people happy by doing what we do with the people in our community. My last shout out is to my best friends, Teegan, Jordan, and Cody. They are always whiling to support my wild adventures, no matter how wild, or strange they maybe.
