We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Bray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaToya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The main goal for starting our business was to provide opportunities for plus-size bodies to feel confident in clothing, especially knowing that the clothes were made by someone that has faced similar struggles. Knowing style is personal and evolves over time, we wanted to create a safe space to connect with the multiple ways you want to be seen.
Representation matters in fashion as well as other areas of life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Outside of running my business, I work in IT as a business analyst. I’ve been fortunate that every position I’ve held has been in a different industry. The experience has helped me be flexible in areas I probably wouldn’t have before that employer. I have always been able to take what I’ve learned from one position and apply it to the next one.
Where I am at today, wasn’t easy. I have been in IT for over 20 years and have faced challenges being sometimes the only woman or black woman in the room. It’s not that way today, which is great!
I’ve had a few managers that will stick with me as they’ve helped me become professionally who I am today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I love to shop and I am not a hiker, our week would consist of hitting the shopping spots and finding good places to eat. I would take them to Sedona, hit up the specialty shops, and schedule a tour with Pink Jeep. Once back in Phoenix, we would go to Westgate, Arrowhead, and Fashion Square mall. I typically don’t buy things in the mall because they lack plus-size options, but it’s a perfect place to walk around, grab some mini hot dogs, and people-watch. Possibly take a trip to the Grand Canyon and stop at the Outlet on the way. The best places to eat are Downtown Phoenix and Mesa. We would decide between hot pot or burgers. Hit the art museum. Have drinks at home because running around is tiring so it’s a good opportunity to sit, eat, and catch up without any distractions.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think my kids deserve a shoutout as they keep me focused and driven. Regarding books, I read a lot, but the most pivotable book for me was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
