We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Chapman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaToya, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started mixing cocktails for fun. I didn’t think to take it more seriously until my husband made the suggestion to start selling cocktails. The bar and liquor business runs on both sides of my family; from juke joint owners, to bootleggers and bar owners. I figured it would be nice to keep the tradition going and turn JarPOURium into a family legacy. JarPOURium is more than just mobile bartending and mixing drinks. It serves as the catalyst for the Black community to be introduced to fine, rare liquors that aren’t typically marketed to us. I wanted JarPOURium to be a service focused on exclusivity and posh amenities.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an educator by trade. I started my teaching career in 2007 and taught grade levels ranging from preschool to 8th grade. I left the classroom in 2020 and am now an instructional coach. I guess it’s not that strange that a teacher would find libations and mixology to be fun hobbies, both of which have become a passion of mine over the years. JarPOURium is currently in the beginning stages which most say is the most challenging of business ownership. Though it may be challenging, I’m using this time to network and learn from others in the spirits industry. One of the significant things I’ve learned is to accept the need to change when new evidence emerges. While it is important to pay attention to what customers have to say, it’s actually being open to change that can ultimately enable you to save time and money. I want JarPOURium to be known for being well-educated in fine cognacs, whiskeys, and rums. I also want the world to know that JarPOURium prides itself in its innovative mixology and exclusive service.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whiskey Haze would be my go-to. They offer an endless selection of rare whiskey and scotch whisky and great food that heightens your whisky tasting experience. Followed by a night of great music and dancing at First Friday’s hosted by DJ Bizzon.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first shoutout goes to my mom, Aunt Classie, and Aunt Paula for sharing stories of our family history as it relates to the liquor and bar business. I truly believe those stories sparked my interest in fine whiskeys, cognacs, and rums. My husband pushed the idea and has been a constant source of encouragement from the beginning. I think he promotes JarPOURium more than I do, all jokes aside. My homegirls who helped me with event ideas, cocktail recipes, and holding me accountable when I get sidetracked or discouraged. Lastly, all of those who have supported by booking a service, driking a cocktail, and those who’ve simply mentioned JarPOURium to someone looking for a mobile bartender.
