Meet Laura Austin | Esthetician | Wax Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura Austin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My immediate feeling associated with taking risks is fear. Where there is risk, there is an exposure to danger, so of course fear is at play in some regard. When I first decided to work independently I was scared out of my mind, but I stayed positive and channeled that fear into being my biggest motivator. If I look back at any risks I’ve taken, whether they were business related or personal, I can confidently say that they were without a doubt the most terrifying and anxiety ridden times of my life. Even though taking those risks caused so much terror I wouldn’t change a single thing about them because of the transformative effects they had on my life. The real fear now for me is complacency. If I’m not challenging myself and taking those risks then I’m not growing. We are supposed to go through phases. We are supposed to transform. We are supposed to change and you have to take risks to get there. I’m currently in the thick of the biggest transformative phase of my life by choosing to start my life over from the ground up. My son and I just moved to Arizona a few months ago, and even though I knew it was going to be scary to start my business over from scratch in Arizona… I knew it was what I had to do. Making this jump has had its ups and downs, its light and darkness, but the strength I have to keep pushing forward is thanks to the risks that younger me took to grow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into the professional world of skin care began 10 years ago in Southern California. As a new resident of Arizona, my own personal metamorphosis has inspired The Naked Monarch. I have dedicated the majority of my career as an Esthetician to being a Wax Specialist with an expertise in women’s Brazilian Wax services. In addition to my years of working as a Wax Specialist, I have also worked for national corporations as a Wax Trainer and Brand Ambassador.
While I have always loved everything skin care related, the world of waxing is where I feel at home. I light up at any opportunity to create a transformation. Over the years I have had clients ask me, “You really like doing this?” With zero-hesitation my answer will always be, “YES.” The instant gratification earned from uncovering soft, beautiful, glowing skin will never deliver a dull moment. The gratitude I feel after a day’s work doesn’t end there though. The relationships that grow between my clients and I are what truly make me love going to work everyday. When someone comes in for their first Brazilian wax with me they are in arguably one of the most vulnerable positions imaginable… in addition to a couple yoga positions. Through our conversation is what puts them at ease and trust begins to form. My clients and I aren’t just talking about the importance of exfoliation and moisturizing in an effort to distract them from any discomfort. We talk about our life experiences, our insecurities, we celebrate each other’s successes, we validate each other’s feelings when maybe the people in our lives outside of the wax studio aren’t. The transformations that happen during a 15-30 minute wax appointment are so much greater than just the turning fuzzy skin into smooth skin. The version of the woman walking into my wax studio feeling fuzzy and maybe not as confident or as sexy as she would like to feel is not the same woman that is walking out. The energy that radiates off of someone who feels more closely connected to her soft and feminine side never goes unnoticed. I am a huge advocate for body positivity, promoting self-love and inspiring women to embrace their feminine energy. Something as seemingly small as softening your skin can set a chain reaction that breeds so much more–think of it as a butterfly effect. Investing in yourself by nurturing your natural femininity will produce a confidence unlike any other.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being new to Arizona I am still exploring things myself, but my son and I love going to The Buffalo Chip in Cave Creek on Friday nights for the rodeo. Our other favorite spots are right across the street at The Roadhouse and The Hideaway. We love going there on Sunday afternoons to play cards and listen to live music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I know that every mama gushes about her children, but the connection I have with my son is something I never could have imagined. From the moment he was born it was like we could read each other’s minds. He has always been my biggest supporter and even on my worst days still looks at me with sparkle in his eyes and open arms. I praise him all of the time for the loving person he is but he is still too young to fully understand how much he inspires me. It is thanks to him that I aim to show up everyday as the version of myself that is seen through his eyes.
