We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been drawn to the arts and being creative, even as a child. I was always running around, creating fun games for me and my friends to play. With the help of my siblings and friends we were able to build an incredible treehouse castle in the “Ditch” (aka the vacant lot in between my best friends and I’s house).

I discovered my love of reading when my dad took me and my older brother to the library. He told us if we each found a book at least an inch thick, and read the entire thing, we would get one whole dollar. I still remember the book I had found and read, about an orange cat that was turned into a boy by a wizard. My dad never did pay me that one dollar for that one book, but my love of reading was discovered and will always be cherished.

As I got older I realized I could create anything I could ever want on paper; the only limit was my imagination. Thus I found my true love, writing. In high school I started out writing copious amounts of love-lorn poetry and short stories. Over the years I have honed my craft and have been blessed enough to publish my first novel “The Shoes” with local publisher, Paperclip Publishing. It will be the first of many stories as I have about twenty jostling around in my brain, trying to see which one will be the next to be written.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ll be honest. Writing is not a glamorous or an easy thing to do. It takes time to figure out your story, the key players, and the plot. Sometimes when you think you are absolutely sure how the story should go, your characters will have other ideas and throw a wrench in to your plot. But the amazing thing about writing is, even if your first draft is very rough and probably shouldn’t be seen by other people, you still completed it! And that in itself is a huge accomplishment.

My book “The Shoes” was truly a labor of love. It did take almost thirteen years for me to complete, but it will always be my first.

It’s the story of Calliope Morgan, who has gotten used to the simple life in Clover, Oregon. Spending her days surrounded by friendly neighbors while helping her Aunt Maggie run their flower shop. She has friends, family, and flower arrangements—what else could she need?

That is, until she meets a gorgeous man bringing her a letter from the father she
has never met, summoning her back to the bright lights and city life in NYC. She hasn’t been there since she was a young girl and her mother passed away, but heading back now could bring back memories long forgotten and spark her simple life into one she never knew existed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Mesa, and there are so many cool and fun places to go check out! I would absolutely take them to downtown Mesa, to show them all the incredible shops and restaurants found there. I took part in the Mesa Book Crawl this year and was hosted by the lovely shop “The Boutique” and hope to do book signings there in the future. I’ll also be hosting book signings at other local shops in Mesa and around the valley. Keep an eye on my social media for more information.

I would also make sure to take them to the Mesa Center for the Arts. Not only do they host a variety of events, classes and concerts there, the facility itself is absolutely beautiful. Some of my author photographs where actually shot there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, my husband Tim. Without him, “The Shoes” would still be an unfinished idea, swimming around in my head. Not only are you my official staff photographer, but you are also my biggest supporter. Thank you babe.
