We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Guerrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luis, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. I’m very curious as an artist. I studied International Marketing at my university (University of Monterrey) but I had a bunch of optional classes with very interesting topics like philosophy, theology, psychology… and even astronomy! I think all of these classes were very helpful in broadening my vision of the world. Today, I consider my writing very special because I believe it combines very existential themes, sometimes social issues that happen in my country, with drama and comedy.

In my city, we value work a lot, so with each new project I always try to work hard and do my best.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an actor, writer and stage director. I think what sets me apart is that I do a little bit of everything. I’ve written two TV series (“La Piloto”, second season and “El Rey”, available on Netflix), more than 20 theatre plays and even studied film in the Vancouver Film School. I love learning and deepening my knowledge in all areas of the dramatic arts.

I´m really proud of my work and writing habits. I love starting new projects, working with different kinds of people… simply telling stories.

Making a living by doing theatre is sometimes hard… but I feel extremely lucky because right now I’m working in the Theatre Department of two of the most important universities in my city. Besides that, I´m writing a lot of plays and scripts.

I think some of the most important recognitions in my career so far are: National Playwriting Award Emilio Carballido 2020 for my play “Memory’s ruins”. Also, that I was selected in 2022 by UNAM and Royal Court Theatre (alongside 9 other Mexican playwrights) to develop a new play with their guidance.

I’ve learned a lot of lessons during my career. First, is to always respect the people you work with. To me, nothing is more important than that. I consider myself a very easy person to work with, to collaborate. I also enjoy risk-taking. It motivates me a lot to always try to do different kinds of projects or ideas. If something works on stage, I rarely do the same kind of project twice.

If my work or life-story motivates someone to embark on a career in theatre of film… I would feel really honored. I’ve heard a lot of times people who are dissatisfied with their work. I feel extremely lucky because I enjoy my work a lot.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Monterrey is a very modern city. We have a lot of great restaurants and bars. We have some of the best meat in Mexico, so I would probably take them to eat some “carne asada” (BBQ) first. We have some very beautiful places full of nature like Chipinque, small towns far away from the main city (like Santiago) and some very interesting museums like MARCO.

And obviously, I’d take them to see some theatre shows!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank a lot of people. First of all, my family and my girlfriend who always support me on this challenging career. Also my mentor, Hernán Galindo, who inspired me to write, to direct and to start producing my own shows.
