We had the good fortune of connecting with Madi Bertermann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madi, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by other people with the same small business mindset and mentality that I have. It’s important to surround yourself with people that bring out the best in you, lift you up, and promote ideals of community over competition.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I originally got into hand lettering as a hobby during quarantine and enjoyed making decor for my family. I made the signs for my brother-in-law’s wedding in January 2021 and was hooked. At that point, I knew I wanted to try to get my foot in the door in the wedding industry and provide custom signs for couples getting married. I really struggled with having confidence in my work and comparing myself to others. It wasn’t until I embraced the uniqueness in my lettering and took the compliments to heart that I started seeing success in my business. Confidence is key. It’s not something I ever pictured for myself, but I’m so excited to continue growing and seeing where this business takes me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve only lived in Phoenix for about 3 years, but there are definitely a few musts from me:

– Farmer’s Market: No matter if it’s Scottsdale, Phoenix, Gilbert, etc., the Farmer’s Market is guaranteed fun. You get to support a bunch of small businesses and find so many unique goodies!

– Hiking: The actual spot can be dependent on the experience level of the hiker, but it’s always nice to take yourself away from the city and get yourself in nature.

– Coffee: If you’re a coffee lover like me there’s a bunch of great spots, but my favorites are The Human Bean and Dutch Bros. The workers at both places always brighten my day.

– Food: Mine and my fiancé’s go-to for the best brisket is Bootleggers Modern American Smokehouse in Old Town Scottsdale. Great food, great company.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give credit to an event I went to focused on women entrepreneurs, AZ Business Brunch. It was put on by Emily Fuller, a photographer in Gilbert, AZ. Women of all different crafts attended the brunch (photographers, florists, calligraphers, shop owners, etc.) and the main focus was to connect and collaborate. I came to the event not knowing anyone, and I left inspired with new ideas and a support system of new friends that’s made me feel like anything I can dream up is possible.
