Meet Madison Roman | Custom Cake Toppers and More – Precise With A Slice

We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Roman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Arnold, Maryland. Growing up I watched the success of my father who is also my best friend. He has always been my inspiration. My dad had his own business, ran his own company. In the house he had his own home office and had his machines set up through out the basement. I remember where my friends parents had to go to work, but mine got to stay home with us. He was there to play with us, pick us up from school, spend time with us even while working. I always admired that and thought it was the coolest thing.
We eventually moved to Arizona with my dad when I was eleven and this changed everything. Half my family remained in Maryland while half of us were in Arizona. My dad sold his business. We moved here to be with my stepmom at the time. They ended up getting a divorce. Her and her children disowned us, as if we werent a family for 10 years. From here, a lot of things happened that put us through a hard time. The divorce made us lose our home and we were tight on money. Even though my dad never let us see him stress, we were conscious of this.
I had a medical condition that put me in and out of the hospital many times that took 10-15 years to diagnose. I lost friends. I lost family. I went through many things. But in the end this has gotten me to where I am now, and has turned me into the person that I am today. This is what made me want my own business. I want to be able to work when I want and also involve my kids into it. I want my kids to feel involved and important, just as my dad made me feel.
All of this has contributed to my morals that I have today. Here at Precise With A Slice we are about honesty and integrity. Personally I never want anyone to feel like we took money or over price items. As someone who has been through money issues, I know what it is like to want something and not be able to get it. I also know what it’s like to have little money and spend it on something I regret or feel like I was ripped off. I would never want my customers to feel that way. I will always stay loyal and honest with my customers and my business. I will not accept an order if I cannot do it. I try to price fair for not only myself but my customers as well. I am always willing to work with someone.
I went through some hard times in my past, but it has made me into the person and business owner I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a fully self made business, who came from no money to where I am today. My business is woman owned and family operated. It started out as a love for crafting. I would make endless products for my kids. Out of everything I did, cake toppers were my favorite to make. It got to a point people would continue to tell me I should sell them. I waited to begin selling anything until I perfected the art. I wanted to make sure I could professionally create a product so customers did not feel as if they had wasted money. I personally know the feeling of purchasing something and regretting it because it was not of great quality. That is something I did not want my customers to experience. So for 2 years I worked at it until I perfected it.
It has not been easy by any means. I work a full time job, have 2 toddlers, and this business. I don’t sleep, but that’s ok. I want my kids to grow up with this business and eventually take it over if they would like. I try to incorporate my kids in the business as much as I can, to get that time with them. They are 4 and 5 so they will help me choose designs, test out products, model them, and more.
There’s multiple things that set us apart from others. Rush orders are our thing. Planning a party is a lot of work and can be draining. There’s things you can forget and remember last minute. We send you an order form where you fill out exactly what you want and we agree on a price. That way we can ensure we are making the product to your needs and you have agreed to pricing. Once you fill out that order form and send it back we will begin to design your product. We will send you photos throughout and once the design is complete we will send you a photo. This is where you can advise if you like it or want to change anything. Once you approve the design we will begin making the product. Once the product is complete we will send you a photo and update you with a tracking number. Precise With A Slice then tracks the package until shipped. Once received, we may check up to confirm you’ve received it and love it. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to San Tan Flats – the soul of Queen Creek. With the live music, dancing, and fires it is a place that must be visited. I would also take them to the Loft and Pantry in downtown Florence off Main St. They’re a cute little store with amazing products and the nicest owners. I may be a bit biased as I have stuff in there, but it truly is the heart of Florence and what that city is all about.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course, my dad! My best friend, my role model, the person I have always looked up to. Some people talked down about the way my dad raised me. But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t have asked for anyone else. Not only did I come out as a business owner and hard working trustworthy person, but I also now have a lifelong best friend. He taught me what I want to be as a parent and I can only strive to be half as great as he was. He also taught me about business. Whenever I have a question, he’s the one I go to. Whenever I have successes or failures, he’s the one I go to. When other’s may have doubted me, he was always cheering me on. Whatever I choose to do in life he is my biggest supporter.
As a child I was not the typical “little girl”. I was a huge tomboy. I dressed in all boy clothes, loved playing “boy” games and sports. Almost all of my friends were boys. I would go into restaurants and servers would always call me a boy. As a kid, I didn’t care but others did. Many other adults would try to change how I was. They would try and force me to wear girly clothes, do my hair, do my nails. I would get talked to by certain adults about how I needed to change because it was embarrassing for them. But my dad never cared. He never tried to change me. He would buy me the clothes I wanted. He would play the games I wanted to play. He would throw baseballs to me instead of trying to make me play with dolls. I mean I was the only girl on an all boys baseball team lol.
Once I was in high school I did film. I was always making videos whether it was for fun or for film class. Without question he would drive me around to film what I needed. He would act in videos for me, dance in videos for me, he would even find videos for me to make and help with ideas. Once out of high school I met the love of my life. We got married fairly quickly, within 3 months. Of course everyone was skeptical, others even tried putting us down by making bets on how long we would last. Meanwhile my dad supported us. My dad paid for our wedding. My dad made sure to be there and took us out afterwards to celebrate. Now here I am 8 years and 2 kids later with a strong marriage. Whenever I need advice on my kids he is the first one to give it without any judgement.
When I started my business my dad and husband were the first ones there. My dad would be offering to pay me to make him items, paying me to design billboards at his job for his employees. He helped me create a book of business. He helped me purchase the equipment needed. Once I started making artwork he asked for paintings for his house. If you go to his house he has my products all throughout. He stands by me no matter what the situation is and I would not be where I am today without him. I am so incredibly thankful for him and all he has done and continues to do.
