We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallory & Jordan Kurlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mallory & Jordan, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
One of the biggest values that we hold dearly at Pretty M.White is authenticity. Since we started our small business, we have always prayed to stay authentically ourselves. Over time, it is so easy to play the comparison game when seeing other businesses grow quicker than our own. In these moments we really try to stick to what inspires us, and fuels us, rather than jump to trends and quick money. There has been countless hours of lying in bed and asking myself “what do I love?” “what am I passionate about?” At the end of the day, this business is only sustainable long term if we are creating a foundation that we are proud of because it represents who we are. The right customers and opportunities will arise when you stay true to your vision and your brand.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pretty M.White is a husband and wife team who also work full time as a civil engineer and nurse. When we are not creating for the business, you can always find us traveling. Over the years, Pretty M.White has turned into a multi layer business. What inspires us most is traveling. We believe that traveling is the foundation for inspiration! All decor is influenced by different cultures, architecture, or sceneries. Because of our love of travel, we also educate, plan, and share our travels with others through our website and social media.

At Pretty M.White we want to make people feel special through the details of travel, decor, and parties. These moments allow people to make life long core memories. Little details may not seem like much to some, but as a whole, the little details are what elevates these experiences into something extra memorable. After going through some big health challenges at such a young age, it has allowed me to understand the importance in enjoying each moment we get. Our goal is to help make moments extra special and memorable along those you love most.

Pretty M.White has truly been a labor of love. It has been everything but easy starting a small business. Working full time, and running the business has come with a lot of sacrifices. From financial, relational, marital, or personal, all sacrifices come at a cost. In these difficult moments we constantly have to remind ourselves of our vision and to keep pursuing our dream.

Some of the lessons we have learned throughout the start of Pretty M.White is how to prioritize. Our marriage comes first, and because we live in our business we make it a priority to travel and have intentional time together. When we travel, it allows us to disengage and reconnect. By doing so, we come out stronger not only in our marriage but for our business as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh what a fun question! We obviously are super into all things local, so we would put local restaurants and bars at the top of our list. We absolutely adore CIBO in Phoenix. That is one of our all time favorite places to eat. Along with Matts Big Breakfast… Their waffle is *chefs kiss*. One of my favorite bar experiences is Century Grand that has multiple bars under one roof. Honestly, there are so many great places, and so many I have yet to discover. However, sticking with places we know, we would go up to Sedona and head over to Page Spring Winery for a day. Other time spent would be adventuring all over the valley to all the fun local shops that we are in!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely! First off, we need to take a moment to thank my husband Jordan. He is just as much as part of this business as am I. Though it was my passion that started this off, he has put countless hours and hard work into this business because he believes in our vision. He works full time, so all of his extra time goes into our business and his constant effort and encouragement is always what keeps me going. I would not want to do this without him!

Another big group of people that have been a HUGE support is all the stores that have taken a chance on us. Not only have they taught us so much, we have formed life long relationships with genuine people that have similar passions as us.

Grungy Galz, was our first ever store! We are where we are today because of them, and couldn’t be more grateful. They love all things old, creepy, and new. They are not afraid to stay true to themselves and it speaks volumes of the owner Bridget.

Old Brick House Vintage Market was a store we shopped at previously, so to be a part of their market is a dream come true, and the talent they all have is inspiring.

Stage Me Fancy is such a fun store in Peoria that loves to support so many local shops from the valley all under one roof!

Audrey’s shop in North Phoenix is full of women who love to craft and shopping local. They are joy in a store if you ever have the opportunity to step foot into their shop.

The Collective Shop in Chandler Fashion Center is full of local creatives that allows us to expand to an audience of customers that may not normally be reached. The mall allows for high foot traffic of people who may not have normally gone out of their way to shop small.

Lastly, our Painted Tree Boutiques shop in Scottsdale has been the first location that we have had complete control over creatively. It has allowed us to mesh all areas of handmade, new, and vintage into one! We are so proud of the space we have been able to curate there.
