Meet Marco Miranda | Visual artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marco Miranda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marco, how do you define success?
I define success as the result of insisting on an idea and transforming it into reality. I believe that the satisfaction of seeing a project carried out and this progressing, is success but above all, having time for yourself and your loved ones is the most valuable thing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to where I am has been by being totally honest with myself and being totally dedicated to art. My university gave me the foundations, but it was by facing hunger, professional ethics and letting go of my family until I achieved economic stability how I learned economics, public relations, sales, etc. I started from scratch in a city that I did not know, Ensenada, B.C. I chose it because it had culture, wine and good weather. I think that gave me an advantage, since I started with nothing, I had nothing to lose, nor any kind of social pressure. I did not want my family to be aware of my needs, because they would have wanted to help me. Now that I have a son, I’m sure that they would have tried to incessantly. My passion for art is so strong, that not even the hunger I experienced during my first years made me fall for making easy money, I always knew I had to put up with showing what my art is. Apart from that, in those early years I had the best advice from a Japanese artist that I greatly admire, she told me, “Marco, never paint to paint, always paint with your soul, if you are not convinced by a work of art, don’t let it out of your workshop”. And that advice was the best I’ve ever had.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, I would take him to eat the traditional food of the city, which is Chinese food (Mexican fusion), then I would take him to a craft brewery where we could share a good beer and give him a tour of my murals (I have painted in several breweries). The next day I would like to have a barbecue. I love cooking on the grill, it is my favorite hobby. All day we would spend by the grill. After, I would take him to the Chinesca neighborhood, to show him the “Callejón Chinesca” project that I had the pleasure to coordinate and organize. This space has won the national tourism award and this was thanks to the art made. From there, I would continue to take him through a craft brewery tour to see more murals while trying different food dishes, where we will surely meet several friends who will accompany us on the tour. I would like to take him hiking to get to know nature around. On the last day I would take him to the project I am currently working on, which I feel will be the most important. I would take him to an ecological park where there is a lagoon with a large population of migratory birds, it’s a beautiful place. I am in charge of putting as much art as possible there, a kind of sculpture garden and space for contemplation is being created for the city, a project that I feel will be the greatest artistic investment for the city and will serve as a precedent for future projects.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, right now who I am dedicating everything to is my son, who is teaching me the value of time, sharing and appreciating the world through his eyes. I’ve been surrounded by amazing people throughout my career but mainly my family has been the greatest support.
