We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Previously I was working for a large corporate contracting business, and while there were advancement opportunities and it was a well-recognized company, I didn’t feel fulfilled. I had dreams of owning my own business one day, and knew I just needed to take the leap if I was ever going to do it. My wife was 2-months pregnant at the time, and while she may have thought the timing was a little scary to be leaving the security net of a dependable salary and health insurance, I saw the potential of what starting my own business could mean for providing for our family.
At first it started out with just me doing everything, and occasionally having a few guys helping out. The real leap came once our son was born, and I needed to hire on a full-time crew. My motivation for my business became not only about doing something I loved each day, but also creating a work-place for my guys where they could also provide for their families. I wanted our company culture to exist on integrity, hard work and mentorship.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m proud to say that we treat every single job like it’s the most important job. We never cut corners, pay attention to details and go above and beyond for our customers.
It hasn’t always been easy. The beginning months were tough wondering where business was going to come from. We just tried to do good work, and fortunately word of mouth got us going and still keeps us going today. With faith and quality work, we knew things would work out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a native of Mesa, some of my favorite spots to eat were the original Backyard Taco and Pete’s Fish and Chips. But if I’m looking for a more entertaining destination, we always make Downtown Gilbert a stop for good food and fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout out to my mom. As a widowed mother, she raised all three of us boys on her own while working full-time and ensuring we got to all of our sports and extracurriculars. She never complained once, and showed the importance of putting God and family first. Her work ethic, dedication to her family and providing for us gave me a foundation for what I wanted to create for my business and family.
