Meet Marnie Zang Katularu | Matchmaker & Licensed Psychotherapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marnie Zang Katularu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marnie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I worked for many years as a marriage and family therapist. I saw couples that were misaligned and lacked healthy tools for happy relationships. After retiring I created a way to match individuals based on clinical studies!!! Aligned values and core beliefs. I wanted to provide single men and women a healthier way to find their forever person. In 18 months I have four marriages, so it seems to be working!!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I worked for many years as Licensed Professional Counselor. I specialized in drug & alcohol abuse counseling and marriage & family therapy. I had my own private practice and worked as clinical director of many treatment facilities. After retiring I knew I was not done helping people. I knew i did not want to go back into the counseling world and i wanted to use my education, training and experience. I literally created something that didn’t exist. I work as a dating and relationship coach with my clients to find long term committed relationships. I teach them about their attachment styles and relationship trauma so they don’t repeat it. If i see anything further that needs to be addressed psychologically, I refer out. My clients are extremely receptive to the process and thriving!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a week long trip I would start with brunch on Sunday at The Camelback Inn!! Then, we could rest and catch some music at the Handlebar J in Scottsdale as they have live bands every Sunday at 2:00pm! Monday we would take a drive up to Sedona and stay at Enchantment. We would stay for two days and hike the vortex and eat at Elote!! Weds we would meet for lunch at Francine’s then walk around the new shops at Fashion Square. For dinner we would go to Mission in Old Town. Thursday we will check in to the Spa at Montelucia for some body treatments and sun bathing next to Camelback Mountain. For dinner, Steak 44 then drinks on the rooftop of the Global Ambassador. Friday we would end with a fair well lunch at Blanco for tacos and margaritas. WHEW!!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My cousin Tiana Zang. She also came out of retirement solely to help me build the business platform from which to launch! We started My Mindful Match as an equal partnership and I bought her out this past summer. Tiana is a brilliant business woman who built her own hospice and sold to private equity before retiring so I knew she would could help me build the business around my concept! Thats exactly what we did. I was in charge of everything clinical, social media and running events and she was the brilliant mind behind the business model. We have shaken up the matchmaking industry because of how we charge and our low cost!
