We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Good and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I first started my latest business, fear of failure was a huge obstacle for me to overcome. Normally, I like to play it safe, I would stay in my lane and do my thing because it was easier than the fear of failure that taking on risk meant.
But anyone who has opened their own business knows, risk is part of the process of building any business. The first few months (okay a year probably!) of building my business, this fear of risk and failure drove me to work harder, get outside my comfort zone and talk to people at networking meetings, and present in front of groups about my business.
While there are fewer fears of failure now that I have been in business 7 years, what I have learned is that everything includes some risk, but I have minimized my risk in a few ways:
1. I have grown slowly and strategically. I don’t take on new employees until I know my monthly income can support them. I have seen friends take on too many employees too early in their businesses and they either don’t know what to have them do, or they don’t have enough hours to keep the employees happy in their roles. By waiting to hire when I have been drowning in work for a few months, I can confidently move forward on hiring, knowing the work is there to support the employee for the long term, not just a month or two.
2. I also built a business that doesn’t require high overhead or inventory, either. I have software, tech and labor costs, but that is about it. These things have also helped me to minimize my risk.
3. Risk is what gets us out of our comfort zones and also what allows for greater reward. Now I don’t stress about the money, or will I have enough website clients, I know that if one person isn’t a good fit, more will come. I might have lulls, but there will always be rainy seasons where there is so much work to do that we will need to expand again.
4. Always be learning. Success and learning about your industry is not a one and done thing, especially when you work in the tech space. We have always prioritized learning new things as part of our ongoing training with our team. If there is a better way to do something, we want to make sure we are at the forefront of that. We are continually learning about new SEO strategies, social media marketing, and attending the latest Shopify, Elementor and WordPress conferences and webinars has been very helpful for us and our clients. We are always on the lookout for what is new an upcoming so we don’t get left behind in our field. Too many people think learning is a one and done thing that they don’t adapt to changing technology. We have worked on “new sites” that people are still using outdated software on, and it is sad to see clients stuck in the past because their last web design company didn’t ever evolve. Being in front of change has helped us adapt and grow our business wisely.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my business back in 2016 when I got into a car crash while thinking about and worrying about the business I was working in. It was a wake up call and I realized at that moment I needed to step back from taking on other people’s problems and build something of my own.
I started small, building websites for friends and family and then, in 2017, I officially quit and started working exclusively as a freelancer.
There were many years of being a solopreneur before I hired by first two employees. From there, it feels like it keeps expanding every year.
I learned a lot of lessons over the years, but one thing I learned is that not a lot of my competitors were doing the simple things, like following through, being responsive, or doing what was in the clients’ best interest. Many cut corners, or would go MIA on clients, and so it was an easy decision once they worked with Geeked Out Media to continue to do so. I am very proud of the fact that we have referrals all the time from former clients. This tells me they trust us, and appreciate how we have helped them.
Business is so often about doing the simple things. It is about maintaining relationships and just being a person of integrity.
Now, 7 years later, our team of 6 is even more equipped to help our clients do what they love, and we help them tell the world all about it. Be it on their website, on their social media channels, in email marketing newsletters, or through graphic design projects. We love what we do, and we are glad it shines through.
Our goal is not to be in the spotlight, but rather to help our clients be in the spotlight. We absolutely love seeing their successes in their business.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love our local area and every opportunity we get to show friends new places and what has changed. There is so much to do in Downtown Mesa now days that we could spend a week visiting places and not see it all. We’d, of course, hit up our favorite local restaurants, like Goat and Ram, Mango’s, Gus’s Fried Chicken, Taco’s Chiwa’s, and Republica Empanada in Downtown Mesa. And we couldn’t forget dessert at The Salted Knot, which still has some of our favorite “Main Street Sweets” items, or stopping in to Chunk Cookies in Tempe. We love supporting small mom & pop restaurants and trying new places.
We also love some of the hikes in East Mesa/Apache Junction like the Wind Caves, trails near Superstition Mountains & Usery Pass.
For a little entertainment, we really enjoy comedy clubs like Jesterz, or going to live performances at Hale Theater in Downtown Gilbert. Plus, we love a good escape room, and there are so many to choose from in the valley. United Escape Rooms in Mesa is a good one, Inferno in Tempe, or we also had tons of fun playing games at Bam Kazaam in Scottsdale.
Those are just our local Mesa/Tempe places, but so much to see and do all over the valley!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of the best things I have done is find a group of like-minded women and business owners to meet with weekly and bounce ideas off of, and hold ourselves accountable with. My little mastermind group is the best! Thank you, Janiece Rice (YAME Consulting), Shelice Millett (Millett Law Office), Charlotte Stewart (Mella Music Therapy), and Harmony Turley (Photomasters Photography) for being a listening ear and coming up with great ideas to help each of us each week.
