Meet Megan Hjelle | Founder and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Hjelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my daughter and all the amazing women who surround me. I felt a calling to create a business that not only prioritizes their safety but also uplifts and empowers them. My aspiration is to foster a supportive community that nurtures these women and gives back in meaningful ways, creating a space where they can thrive and feel truly valued.

After some not-so-great experiences with rideshare services, I decided to create a safe alternative that would provide women with another option for transportation. Thus, Alegna emerged in August 2023, dedicated to providing safe and reliable transportation for women in our valley.

The support, as well as the clients we have gained since our launch have continued to inspire me. Emphasizing on the safety of these women drives our mission, and through numerous community events, we strive to create a strong and united network.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Alegna aims to provide a supportive, female-only ride share service that offers a comforting alternative for getting around! Alegna emerged from a deeply personal journey, shaped by my own negative experiences with ride share services. Rather than remain a victim of those circumstances, I felt compelled to take action. My heart goes out to all women who have faced similar challenges, and I wanted to create a safe haven for those who might be dealing with past traumas, anxiety, or discomfort while riding with a stranger.

I truly believe that achieving meaningful goals requires dedication, hard work, accountability and a consistent approach. This is especially true in the realm of business, where the journey can be quite challenging. Opening a business can be a daunting task, and it becomes even more intimidating when you’re pursuing a path that might not be universally embraced. However, my determination and sincere passion for helping others and advocating for those who are vulnerable drives me forward, even in the face of adversity.

The most significant challenge I have faced thus far is achieving a balance between work and personal life. Successfully running a company demands significant commitment and often requires attention around the clock. I am fortunate enough to have individuals in my life who provide grounding, support, and compassion. Without the support of my family, friends, and the broader community, Alegna would not be the success it is today. As a result of their support and my dedication, I am proud to announce that we are in the process of expanding our operations to Las Vegas, Nevada, with the goal of helping even more women feel safe in the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Easy! One of my dearest friends and I have embarked on countless of thrilling adventures together, especially since she hails from the far-away land of Minnesota and frequently visits. I picture our ideal itinerary filled with fun road trips to explore new spots, like kayaking at The Emerald Cave or soaking up the views in Sedona. We’re definitely going to hit the trails in search of the best nature photos, try our hand at skydiving for that epic thrill, and enjoy horseback riding too! On those quieter days, we’ll stroll through the beautiful Botanical Gardens and indulge in all the yummy food Arizona has to offer. And if there’s a good concert happening, you know we’ll be there!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to extend a heartfelt shout-out to my wonderful Mom, Peggy Doane. She has been my unwavering cheerleader and has offered immense support throughout the journey of creating Alegna and beyond. Even though she retired in early 2024, she has selflessly stepped in to help with our client load as we continue to stay fully booked.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge our incredible community. Alegna truly wouldn’t be possible without the support from each and every one of you.
