We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Lange and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I actually try not to use the word balance. As I find balance is an unattainable mark, as things are always skewed one way or the other. Instead, I gravitate to the term “harmony” and the idea that your life can have a melodious flow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When we first opened the gallery I was 21-years old and primarily focused on being a gallery owner. It wasn’t until nearly 10 years later that I started painting part time and as soon as I made the shift a sense of harmony was created in my day to day.
As an artist I create quiet contemplative landscape scenes within the human form, making my work uniquely both figurative and landscape. I call these pieces “inner landscapes.” As an artist I spend a lot of time reflecting inwardly as I paint outwardly. I like the idea that we have an ‘inner landscape’—a map created from emotions, ideas, and sensations collected throughout our lives.
Like many of us, I feel a strong affinity with nature. My artwork is directly inspired by my outdoor experiences, which I can vividly recollect. When I close my eyes, I can easily conjure smells and the feel of the forest floor or a field from my childhood on my feet, these memories are inside me and I use them to define the space I live in; sometimes consciously but often I think they color my day to day without even knowing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
No matter where I am, I gravitate towards the ocean and have always lived within biking distance of water. As the owner of an active Blue Heeler dog, I spend almost as much time outside as inside. My dream day is swimming in the morning, eating an incredible meal (maybe an afternoon nap) and then taking a long walk at the end of the day. Luckily we live in one of the most culturally rich cities in the country, so in addition to the sunshine we have plenty of food and art. Our gallery is in an old 1800s building in the heart of the City.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Robert Lange and I have been together for 24 years, married for 19, and owned a successful business together for 20. Where one of us falters the other excels. We don’t just finish each others sentences, at this point we just make eye contact and have full conversations.
