Meet Megan Rawlings | Owner of Bakers Bun

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Rawlings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I can remember being around 10 years old making a box mix of lemon bars and pretending that I was a chef running a kitchen, I was hooked and have loved baking ever since. You could always catch me making desserts for my friends and family saying what a dream it would be to have a bakery of my own but I didn’t think it was actually a possibility for me, I was scared of the risk. What if I fail? I was pursuing a nursing degree when the world was flipped upside down in 2020 and after thinking back to that 8 year old in the kitchen baking, I knew it was time to try. Starting a business post pandemic and putting school on hold was a huge risk and I caught myself wondering if I had lost my mind, and then the first order came in and then the second and so on. It has been the best risk I have ever taken and getting to see people enjoy the pastries I love to bake is a feeling that will never get old.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started Bakers Bun as a way to share recipes on Instagram and then took a leap and made holiday assortments with cookies and other holiday treats in December. After seeing how people loved what I was baking I made a more permanent menu for ordering and am so proud of the pastries that I have created. It was not always smooth sailing and there was so much trial and error in getting the recipes right, but I am so grateful to everyone who has placed an order so far! I’ve learned so much and am excited to continue learning in the growth of Bakers Bun.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my gosh, as a native to Arizona I may be biased in saying that we have the best places to checkout! I would start the morning grabbing coffee and a pastry at Valentine, everything is local to Arizona and they put so much care in the flavors and products they serve, it’s amazing. I’d probably taken them to one of the many local farmers markets we have, Arizona has so many amazing local businesses to support and so many hidden gems. Depending on the time of year I’d take them on a hike at South Mountain or Camelback, nothing beats the views that we have. The Farm at South Mountain is a great spot to grab lunch, everything is farm to table and always so tasty! Highball, Little Rituals or 1912 are some of my favorite spots for a drink before seeing some live music at Crescent Ballroom or The Van Buren. If I’m wanting to get out of the city, Sedona is heaven on earth and I love getting up there whenever I can! Arizona has so much to offer, you just have to explore!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many of my early memories of baking are with my mom, I still have a few of her original notecards that she wrote recipes on as a teenager and a lot of the tools that I still use to make my pastries were passed down from her. I wouldn’t have the love I have for baking if it hadn’t been for baking with her growing up. I also need to shout out the love of my life, Matt, his encouragement and support of this business has been unrelenting from the beginning. It was after a conversation with him about my dream of baking professionally that Bakers Bun was started and I forever grateful for his support and patience as I navigate this journey.
