We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I bought my first airplane and learned to fly 10 years ago for personal purposes. Having connections all over the country through my equestrian sport, I quickly had many requests for “ride-alongs”. I also got to know a lot of fellow pilots, in aviation careers, and through them many air travel managers. It really is a small world in the private aviation sector. When COVID had detrimental effects on commercial air travel in 2020, the private sector really took off (!). I saw the benefits of getting my commercial certificate and making myself official. In equestrian show jumping there is a type of fence called an oxer jump, inspiring my name “Oxer Air”. With my built in clientele base of traveling equestrian athletes, the focused advertising to athletes eventually grew to their other trip requests – vacations in Canada and the Caribbean, horse shopping trips in Europe. Now I am providing all sizes and types of jets to any corner of the globe!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are many options out there for private jet travel. What sets me apart is that I have life experience on all sides of the platform. I have been a charter flight customer. I have traveled to 27 different countries and more islands than I kept track of. I have scheduled and coordinated and dispatched flights for parts 91, 135, and 121 operators (private, charter, commercial). I have been the pilot. I have flight experience in 15 different types of airplanes, and 2 types of helicopters. I am rated in seaplanes, landing on the water. Because I understand all aspects of the flight experience from conceptualization to completion, I am uniquely qualified to provide the best private charter experience!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
No question, my favorite spot in the world is Lake Como in Italy. There is an amazing spa hotel at the top of the mountain overlooking it. The Italian town of Bellagio is right there on the water (yes, the one that is emulated in Las Vegas). And the world’s oldest seaplane base is there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Becoming a pilot opens up an entire world of people enthusiastic to help you. Especially as a woman- we make up only 7% of all pilots! Starting with your initial initial training- there are so many scholarships and organizations and support groups for aspiring pilots. With each new rating came more support and inclusion from FAA examiners, airport staff, fellow students, retired instructors. Pilots love to “pass the torch” to the next generation. Everyone cheers your successes and shares the determination for the next step. But the support doesn’t stop when your career starts! Whatever I am looking for, be it a specialty airport, a unique request (did you know transporting cold-stunned loggerhead sea turtles is a thing? It is!), personalized decorating onboard for a special event (honeymoons and birthdays on a private jet are top notch), I can be confident that I can provide any client’s request because of the never ending support of my peers. I am only one person, and can only fly one airplane at a time; but with a network of capable pilots around the globe I can provide many flights for many clients at the same time! It is truly beautiful to match travelers with their personal aircraft choice, talented pilots, and desired destination.
