We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Boyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I will first make it clear that I am not a fan of taking risks, but I believe wholeheartedly that risk is a good thing for advancement. I am not a natural risk taker, but I’m thankful that I was brought up with the conviction that you cannot live in fear. We often put fear and risk next to each other, but I’ve lived enough life to see first hand that, more often than not, amazing things come from taking a purposeful and thoughtful risk. My career journey has forced me to embrace the risk and reject the fear. I have a husband, 2 small children, and a huge dream for the beauty industry, at large. And luckily, my husband is my biggest rock to lean on when I do inevitably get fearful. I recently took a huge risk by leaving my full time, stable job to make my part time business a full time reality. This was a true risk because our family needs dual incomes and childcare, etc.., but I can tell you that I feel true peace now that I am walking in that risk, and as a result I am experiencing improved mental health and renewed visions for what I plan to build in my beauty community. I hope you can find the strength to take a thoughtful risk and see it through, because so much more beyond financial growth is planted from this brave action!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At face value, my career looks like I am a Lash Artist and Facialist. But, within it is much more than that. Not only am I making women feel beautiful and valued, which is incredibly rewarding, but I am also working behind the scenes to build a beauty industry community, starting here in Tucson. That topic may be for another day, but I see so much potential that can explode from this industry and I hope to develop additional businesses that explore this potential. I am so excited for what is to come! Coming to this point in my career was a bit of a late start from what I would have preferred, but perhaps the timing is perfect. I began this career when I turned 30, but for my young adult years I was under the impression that I was incapable of anything great, so I didn’t take risks for myself. This belief was a result of being raised with an alcoholic father, and unfortunately I think too many people may relate to this experience. But, life can be very good to us despite hardships, and ultimately I found my purpose for how I want to leave a positive impact that addresses beauty professionals and clients alike. It starts with Nema Aesthetics and I hope it outpours into launching different companies for the beauty professional that focuses on growth, mental health, education, and community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends and family come to visit we have some key Tucson places we love taking them to! We always start a visit by taking our guests to the Mercado Market and have dinner on the patio at the San Agustin. The evening outdoor vibes are great there! For fun drinks, I always take people to The Moonstone, a rooftop bar at The Graduate Hotel. The night skyline views are amazing. To have some fun family time, I would take them to the Sonoran Desert Museum, it’s a great place to appreciate the wildlife here in Az. And if we are feeling ambitious, I would want to take my guests to Tumamoc Hill at sunrise. It’s a gorgeous view while you make the steep up hill trek! Afterwards, going to Seis for their breakfast is always a good call, I am obsessed with their bacon breakfast tacos. And to end any visit we always take our friends and family to dinner at North, our favorite restaurant in town!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been amazed at how encouraging my husband, Joel, has been with my career pursuits. He knows I have this big, expensive business dream to build a really amazing community for beauty professionals, and yet he doesn’t just want to support it, he wants to partner with me on it. It’s a beautifully bewildering feeling to see someone believe in you so much, and I just can’t express well enough how much his love and support means to me. I would also have to mention Victoria Gonzalez of VG Beauty Lounge. She has been a source of encouragement and inspiration for me since the day I met her. She is someone who loves this beauty community and wants to see women find freedom and peace from their entrepreneurialism. She has been a constant reminder that women who work hard and walk with love are hard forces to stop.
