Meet Melissa Leon | Virtual CFO, Mother, Efficiency B

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Leon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I started my virtual CFO business in early 2020. It started as a hobby, where I could use my accounting and finance skills to help small business. Is was a way for me to use my passion and give back to my community. In mid 2020 the demand grew and my business partner joined. Since then we have helped more than 30 small businesses organize and optimize their financials. As we started to find our niche we realized we were most passionate about helping entrepreneur mothers. I started a PodCast spin off called the Efficiency B, and a book will soon follow. The premise of the business, the podcast and the book are to help people to do the RIGHT things, not ALL the things. We, my partner and I, are both mothers with a passion for helping entrepreneurs find their work / life balance by focusing on the single element that gives them the most joy, which if often not managing the accounting of their business. We offer business owners opportunities to streamline, automate and improve processes from operations to finance. My personal work / life balance has improved tremendously as I continue to look for ways to eliminate, delegate and automate my life and business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Two Sense Consulting is all about helping small businesses manage time and money. We know that most people start their business to work on something they love, and for most of them, accounting is not the thing they love. My partner and I have been working together for over ten years, always far apart from each other. She lives in Hawaii, I live in Arizona. We both hold MBA, certifications in project and change management. Building the business as not been hard, but it has required focus. I have had to spend money in areas to make time for other money making opportunities. For example, I hired a personal assistance to help me with home items (my husband has a career out of the home) so that I could spend time on money making tasks. I’ve learned that many female business owners struggle to hire help because they feel since they are able to do it all they should. We believe you will be far more successful, balanced and overall happier by only focusing on what you love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, so many places to visit in Arizona. I am an Arizona native. Grew up in Tucson and went to college in Flagstaff. I lived in Sedona for a year, Scottsdale and Phoenix for more than eight years. Then Florence for three years and now I reside in Mesa. So many awesome places to see. Definitely the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Karchner Caverns. If there is time we have to so see the Saguaro National Monument, Old Tucson and the Biosphere 2. We of course have to golf, because I’m married to a golf professional and maybe even go camping in the White Mountains. We can eat anything you want, I’m not much of a foodie but am always happy to try new things. I don’t drink alcohol but love NA beer, Athletic Brew is my altimeter favorite. My kids would be upset if we didn’t spend some time at the lake, our favorite is Saguaro Lake where we can often see the Salt Water Wild Horses. Phoenix often gets great shows off Broadway so we can go see a show if there is one in town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, I just never knew what I wanted to do. In 2019 I found myself at a cross road and started bouncing ideas off my best friend, Cara. She’s been my person since kindergarten. She listened to my ideas, offered feed back and even made the original suggestion of “two cents” as my business name. Her husband Jared Goss, owner of Kodeak Digital Media, helped me to get a website created and start many of the fundamental steps in business ownership. Without them I would have false started. They helped me we creativity, design and helped me to narrow my focus.
