We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
I disagree with the conventional wisdom bestowed on individuals who say they are ready to get their finances in order. Typically they are told to start with a budget. My advice is to start thinking about your values and priorities in life. When you have clarity about what is important to you you can approach your finances with confidence. As far as the actual steps to take, start my getting organized. Find all of your financials then calculate your net worth. All you do is add up everything you own, then add up everything you owe. Subtract the amount you owe from what you own and you have calculated your net worth. Then do this once a year. Watch the trend line. Are you growing your net worth?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Anything worth doing is going to come along with challenges. However, I believe the challenges of building a business that helps women become confident and secure in their personal financial decisions, and in life, are minimal compared to the rewards. I believe in approaching the topic of money by not talking about it initially. I focus on my client’s visions for the future based on their values.
Two things I’ve learned as a business owner is to delegate and to identify and fill gaps. Find out what your clients need, what they want and need but aren’t getting, then find a way to deliver.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I decided to write and publish my book, I did so because I wanted to make a positive impact in the lives of millions of women. To support my mission I also committed to giving all of the proceeds from Going Rogue to non-profits that benefit women. All 2022 proceeds are going to Women With Knives which is an organization dedicated to empowering women through the sport of knife throwing.
