We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Nolde and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The process behind starting my own business was more of a passion. While I worked with other professionals in the media industry I saw how they adapted on their own by creating their own freelance business. These professionals were able to pick and choose projects they were interested in or had a passion for. Some strictly did film, others did broadcast, commercials and photography. Seeing how happy they were working for themselves gave me the courage to try to go out on my own and create something I know I would be proud of. I know it wasn’t going to be an easy task but I am glad I took the risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is being versatile with my work. I never back down from a challenge and always open to try different lines of creative work. The way I look at it is, culturally there is so many different styles of art we can learn from. The most exciting work I get to do now is travel videography and photography.
To be able to travel to different spots and film what you enjoy is a life achievement. It wasn’t the easiest or prettiest path but I eventually got there. Freelancing does has its ups and it really has its downs. One month you will be overloaded with work, the next month you might only have a few jobs, and some months your hustling to work any project to pay the bills. Luckily during my start up I had a side gig bartending which I owe a lot of credit to since I was able to buy a lot of my own equipment through this job.
A few lessons I learned throughout this process is everyone who shakes your hand isn’t your friend in the industry. Another lesson is to listen to your body. Long hours grinding with little sleep will take a toll on your thinking process and simple mistakes will be made. If you are thinking about giving up, DON’T! All the hard work and effort you put into this career there is always someone else standing behind you ready to take your spot. Just take a breather, recenter yourself and focus on the goal.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends were visiting these are the places I would take them.
Bottled Blonde and Casa Amigos are next to each other with a great night club vibe.
Wasted Grain has a good time if you like live bands.
Toca Madera is my favorite spot is a high end Mexican restaurant with great drinks.
Sumomaya is a fusion restaurant for Japanese and Mexican.
Olde Town Scottsdown is a cool spot to stroll around and check out shops.
Lastly Coach House is a great spot for to hang for drinks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to my parents who stood behind me and my decision to go out on my own, my friends who helped me on projects when I was just a one man show, and my wife Raquel who is always supportive of everything I do. The whole process of starting your own business can be intimidating and very stressful in the beginning. As long as you stay positive and work hard you will over come any obstacle that comes in your way.
