We had the good fortune of connecting with Nazzer O. Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nazzer O., what do you attribute your success to?
Being a persistent person has helped me achieve my personal and professional goals in life. I have also learned to listen to people with solid backgrounds and consider them my mentors.

A long time ago I received the advice “if you start a project, finish it, don’t leave it halfway” and I took it very seriously …

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My professional life has been full of challenges and opportunities that I have been able to navigate. Being binational, bilingual, and bicultural has allowed me to have a global vision of the region where I live now: Yuma, Arizona.

One of the main challenges has been to change my place of residence several times (within the Sonora-Arizona region), all places have unique assets and they have taught me enormously. I would not change anything at all.

I am currently the executive director of the 4FrontED binational initiative and I love my job, which allows me to collaborate with different agencies located in the US-Mexico border region. In addition to considering aspects as important as teamwork, which is essential for the prosperity of both countries.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Yuma region has a privileged location, you can eat delicious dishes in its historic downtown, but within a few miles driving, you can access a very broad and fused gastronomic culture in cities like San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, and Mexicali, Baja California.

If we talk about outdoor activities, the Colorado River is the perfect place for canoeing or simply admiring a sunset.

Another attraction that we have close by is the dunes’ area in the Imperial Valley, among many others.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is dedicated to my beautiful wife Edith, who is the love and light of my life.

I have always been surrounded by wonderful people who have guided me in several ways, but without a doubt, my mother’s perseverance must be recognized. She has been the wind that has driven my wings since my birth.

To my entire family and friends, accomplices of this adventure called life …
